Farms Are Never Good

The horses have grown tired, and so have we. While we may only be half a day away from Winterfell, I fear we will meet our demise from exhaustion before this. I watch as Melissa closes her eyes, slowly slipping off her horse until her eyes snap open and she regains her posture.

"We need to stop, Marienne. We've run out of food and water." She shakes her head as she tries to empty the rest of her bottle into her mouth, but only mud comes out.

"And where are we supposed to find some more!" I say irritated, the lack of supplements has caused us to strike up futile arguments with each other over the past day.

She sighs without another word, navigating her horse through the foliage of the forest ground. Trees surround us, and my delirious mind has caused hallucinations, such as seeing a farm up ahead.

A farm?

I squint, looking through the trees, as my horse jolts me up and down on its back.

"Do.. do you see what I see Mari?" Melissa says in astonishment. With no reply, I pull on the reigns of my horse and we gallop towards it. Food, water, comfort, all within our grasp for the first time in weeks, nearly months.

"We'll be okay!" I call to Melissa, laughing.

We nearly make it onto the cobbled path leading up to the farm when Melissa screams my name loudly from behind me. In worry I spin around, but she waves at me to come back to her. She jumps off of her horse, and hides behind a nearby rock, beckoning me to do so also.

"Mari, we haven't thought this through!" She says worried, biting her lip as she looks over the rock and at the farm a hundred metres away.

"Melissa they have food. Water. Shelter." I say, ticking them off with my fingers, "That's all I need." I am about to get up when she pushes me to the floor.

"Look. You along with your sister are wanted throughout pretty much all of Westeros, I doubt a couple of farmers that would be more than inclined to the money they would receive through your capture would let us just walk right through unharmed." She says, and I purse my lips. She was right.

"How about we take a quick look around, then just hide in the back for the night so they don't even know we are there?" I reason with her, and she sighs, biting her lip in indecision.

Finally, she nods. Looking at the horses, her eyes scan the trees behind us. "We'll keep the horses here, and if anything goes wrong we can just escape on them through the trees we just came through." She says, pointing to the trees behind us.

And so, this is how we found our shelter for the night. We slowly creep round the side of the farm, as the sun begins to set across the horizon in luminous stripes of gold and orange. We try to look in the windows, but they painted black, a sign that Melissa did not like.

We walk around the side and find a stable, a door already leaning open. I look to Melissa with a broad smile on my face- finally, some shelter!

"Come on!" I beckon her over to the door; a look of uncertainty still sitting on her face. I peer round the corner, and the stable is empty. Bunches of hay laying all around, a faint smell of manure wafting through, yet nothing can deter me from a good nights rest in this stable.

Shuffling can be heard from outside, yet I race inside the stable to find a hiding spot in case the farmers come in while we sleep.

"Marienne." Melissa says in a tone I was unable to decipher, and I turn to see her pointing at the floor wide-eyed.

I follow her finger to see patters of blood soaked into the hay. When I say patter, I mean more of a pool. My mouth opens but say nothing, unable to find a good reason for why there might be pools of blood in this empty stable.

She walks to me and grabs my arm. "We need to leave. Now."

We come to a halt in the doorway, when two tall figures stand in the way.

"Another two." The taller one says in a gruff voice, looking down at the other figure.

"You grab the right and I'll grab the left." They say, walking towards us with damp cloths. I look to Melissa in terror as she looks back at me, trying to run from the figure but with no avail.
