34: Back To the Future

Pietro zooms past dad and I as we carried in coils on our shoulders. We walked past Thor, who was strolling in with a can of beer in hand.

"Drifting left on the side there, Lebowski." Dad says to him before calling out to Rocket. "Ratchet, how's it going?"

"It's Rocket. Take it easy. You're only a genius on Earth, pal." Rocket retorts and I gave dad a smile, and he rolled his eyes.

A few minutes later, I'm walking with Rhodey to where the suit is being fixed.

"Time travel suit? Not bad." Rhodey comments.

"I know, right?"

"Hey, hey, hey! Easy, easy!" Scott suddenly calls out.

"I'm being very careful." Bruce tried to explain.

"No, you're being very Hulky." Scott insists.

"I'm being careful."

"These are Pym Particles, alright? And ever since Hank Pym got snapped out of existence, this is it. This is what we have. We're not making any more." Scott announced anxiously.

"Scott, calm down." I told him.

"Sorry. We've got enough for one round trip each. That's it. No do-overs. Plus two test runs." He shrinks for a few seconds before turning back to his regular size.

"One test run."

"All right. I'm not ready for this." He admits and Rhodey sighs.

"I'm game." I turned back to see Clint leaning against the wall. He looked like a kid going through the punk phase. "I'll do it."

"Clint, now you're gonna feel a little discombobulated from the chronoshift. Don't worry about it." Bruce explains to him as Nebula worked on it.

'Wai-Wait a second, let me ask you something. If we can do this, you know, go back in time, why don't we just find baby Thanos, you know, and…" he makes a gesture that suggests tying a rope around baby Thanos' neck and pulling tightly.

"First of all, that's horrible…" Bruce cuts him off.

"It's Thanos." Rhodey say in a 'duh' tone.

"…and secondly, time doesn't work that way. Changing the past doesn't change the future." Bruce finished.

"Look, we go back, we get the stones before Thanos gets them…Thanos doesn't have the stones. Problem solved." Scott says, turning to me for approval and I gave him a look that said 'weeelll'

"Bingo." Clint adds.

"That's not how it works." Nebula corrected.

"Well, that's what I heard." Clint insists.

"What? By who? Who told you that?" Bruce asked.

"Star Trek, Terminator, TimeCop, Time After Time…" Rhodey starts to count off his fingers and I watched in amusement.

"-Quantum Leap" Scott butts in.

"A Wrinkle in Time, Somewhere in Time…"

"Hot Tub Time Machine-" Scott adds again.

"Hot Tub Time Machine."

"Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." I added and Bruce glares at me.
"Don't encourage this."

"Basically, any movie that deals with time travel." Rhodey continues.

"Die Hard? No, it's not one…"

"This is known." Rhodey insists.

"I don't know why everyone believes that, but that isn't true. Think about it; If you travel to the past, that past becomes your future. And your former present becomes the past. Which can't now be changed by your new future…" Bruce explained.
