After a short meal, we all walked somewhere, we didn't know where, just looking for the army or other survivors. Nick and Julie were in the lead, behind them was Shelly and Shaun. I swear, they are never more than 5 feet away from each other! It's like they were tied together with a string! As Shelly said, they really, truly were two peas in a pod. A very tight one where neither of them could move any further away from each other! They were like Martin and Julie but worse, and slightly less gross.
That left me and Martin next to each other. Normally, I hated the mere sight of his face, but I felt slightly different. I still hated his guts, but everything felt a little more justified.
"Hey, I feel like I shouldn't ask this, but why did you say 'good riddance' when you told us your mother died?".
"'Cause that bitch deserved it!" He responded immediately and with such an angry tone it made me jump. Thankfully, I could tell from his voice he wasn't mad at me for asking, all the resentment (if that's the right word) was to his mother.
"...But what did she do...?".
"Huh, what didn't she do? First she made me from cheating, then she smoked around me all the goddam time since I was a toddler, I have a cough all the fucking time! She'd never cook or clean, I'd have to do that shit even though I didn't know how to! Neither dad lived with us either, so no-one could do it for me. And she couldn't get one damn fact through that thick fucking skull of hers! I tried to tell her that I'm not dumb when I got my test results back, but just that tests don't evaluate knowledge properly! But she would never understand that. She would never understand anything about stress or my emotions. She couldn't even care about my emotions! I was always holding back tears, if I cried, she yelled at me! She never cared about me, and she didn't try to hide it!" It felt like he was dumping a whole lot of shit off his shoulders. He looked oddly relieved.
Unrelated but, someone finally gets it! Tests suck! They don't ask proper questions! And they don't properly see intelligence!
"I'm sorry that happened to you...". I replied, genuinely sorry. I didn't fully understand until then that not everyone had a mother as amazing as mine.
"Meh, dead now ain't she? Who cares, I'm outta there!".
He smiled, it felt nice to see.
...
"What's cheating?". I asked.
