ZANE

I SNEAK glances at her as we cook. She looks so effortlessly pretty, like my very own angel.

"Okay we just need to wait for that to finish cooking in the oven and we're done." She says, sliding our lasagne into the oven.

She then turns to look at me and I watch her as she decides whether to stay or to go.

"Stay, let's have some wine." I offer instead of giving her the choice and she reluctantly agrees.

I open a bottle of red wine and pour it into two wine glasses for us, bringing it over to where she's sat by the kitchen island.

"Thanks." She mutters quietly and I nod, sitting on the stool next to her.

A stale silence fills the otherwise lively kitchen. This house has a perfect balance of modern and homeliness qualities and it feels as though it should be filled with laughter and long conversations, they echo in my mind in an attempt to soothe the awkwardness.

"This doesn't mean we're friends." Callie says almost to her self as she stares off at the oven.

I nod, "I know." And I mean it.

That's when Jason walks in, "Oh hey guys, it smells amazing in here. I assume you're cooking dinner?"

I don't reply, leaving the talking to Callie. "Yeah we're making a lasagne, it shouldn't be too long until it's finished."

"Nice, you're Calista right?" He replies warmly, leaning on the other side of the island opposite us. I feel my chest tightening at the sight of her talking to another man and frown.

I'm not jealous am I?

"Yeah."

"Kelsey's mentioned you before and your friend Morgan. You're both nurses right?" Jason questions and Callie sips her wine.

"That's right. How do you know Kelsey?"

"We're childhood friends and we went to college together as well, so we've known each other for years."

Ugh.

I eye him up, he's kinda tall and pretty lanky. He has thick black glasses and very thick black wavy hair. He looks nerdy.

Does she like nerds?

"That's longer than we've known her." Callie laughs, "We met seven months ago, maybe eight by now on a night out."

Night out? The image of Callie going out and seeing other people in the time we've spent apart makes me finish the rest of my glass. I know I have no right to care, I mean it was my fault but still, it doesn't mean I can't be unhappy about it.

"And what about you?" Jason turns to me as I swallow the rest of the wine.

"I'm Zane." I say shortly and Callie kicks my leg. "It's nice to meet you." I add.
