"Dears, my granddaughter is a good child but since an epidemic plagued this town years ago, we lost the Mayor and the townspeople, including my precious granddaughter. I survived that tragedy and maybe will die along with the memories I cherished when this town was still alive and beautiful. I have lived in this part of town for almost fifty years and I never felt so grieved knowing that this place will just rot and disappear in the map of Brazil. It is too bad for Muerta isn't the ghost town we had before. This is a lively and happy town during the days when our kids and women dominated the folks of Muerta. After the severe flu that hit us and the whole town, our youngsters and women fled to the west or east and the men who fought the epidemic lost their lives to fight it. But unfortunately, no one survived, only me and the spirit of my granddaughter who lives in my heart, and that is it.", Gina explained and asked us to stay for the night and heated us some egg soup for dinner. She told us about the good times and feasts their town holds every year like the music festivals that coincides with Brazil's flower, pride and muzik events. Haaa, she said that those were her happy memories of Muerta and Gina gave as an album to look at the pictures of her town before with people and all.
It is too bad that our Mayor was killed in a blood bath. It was the night when he and his wife was about to attend our festival. Some gun men wanted to rob the Mayor's wife's purse which is a Louis Vuitton. It costs a lot during those days and it has money in it too, for the thugs knew that the Mayor was about to give a handsome money for the people of Muerta. Which is his usual act of gratitude for the towns people's kindness and support for his candidacy. The couple died right on the spot but the purse was safe and intact that I as the elder of the town, took it and distributed the blood money to our poor villagers during those times. The Canudos tried to look for the culprits but we didn't know what happened to them. Yet, after weeks and we totally forgot about the incident and let the police handle our Mayor and his wife's case, the thugs were seen tied on ropes all over with a note that says "we are thieves, imprison us".
The town celebrated that day like we never did to thank God for helping us find the killers of our good Mayor and his wife. Haha!, it was funny how the thugs were so scared and pale when we saw them that night. And I have always guessed that you and your sisters might have something to do with that incident!?, Gina said and looked at Jona and me seriously.
Ah, well, Ma'am!, Jona said and Gina interrupted to call her by her first name, Ah yes, Gina, we don't hurt evil people or even kill them, we just want to make them learn a lesson murder isn't good and we have sworn by the Sisters of the Shadow Oath, that we are here only to uphold the peace and save people from injustice and unhealthy situations.
Yes, and you saved my town, though they are already gone, still we are thankful to what you did and I am grateful that you cared for us until now!, Gina insisted for us to stay the night, but Beca refused the old lady's wishes and asked her to come with them and live in Favela so she won't need to be alone anymore.
Gina was glad for her to have offered such a wonderful gift but she wants to stay and be with her granddaughter here in this cold but once a happy town she loved and lived for for many years.
Jona and I woke up inside the car. We slept and thought we had a dream of going to the town and meeting Gina. Jona looked at me and said that we should check on the old lady who invited us to visit her home. It's really dark so Jona started up the car and drove inside the dark, cold and dirty town. When she passed the welcome sign of the said town that says, "Muerta", the sign fall off and Jona riveted to move the car away to avoid the collision and stopped in the middle of a worn out town. Jona checked her map and when she is sure that the house in front of them is Gina Reyna's, she asked me to check on the old lady's house if she is still living there while Jona turns the head lights beamed at me walking towards the house.
I opened the door and tried to turn the light on which is located on the right side of the door panels. It turned on and I saw no one in the living room, kitchen and bathroom. The house is tidy and smells nice. I walked towards the stairs and checked on one room after the other. The second room has a lamp on and there I saw Gina or Mrs. Reyna sound asleep, or so I thought. She is cold as ice and when I checked on her vital signs, she has already passed maybe a couple of hours ago. I felt so bad that I ran to Jona for help. We were late and we weren't able to save Gina, who wrote us a letter that was left under that casserole she cooked for us before she died.
It was the saddest day of my life. I felt really bad that I cried profusely, even when after the police and ambulance came in to pick up Gina's body. Why did we fell asleep?, I always thought of that event and it's still so vivid to me until now I cry every time I think of it. Jona wrapped her arms around me and consoled me. Maybe Gina didn't want us to see her pass and gifted us her loving and happy nature as a lasting memory of her and this once beautiful town. I took the album with me and placed it on my study's book shelves. I placed Gina's photo on a frame and prayed for her soul to rest in peace, which is I know really at peace for the dream we were in before we even came to their town and her house, is solid proof that she is happy to have known us and was just grateful for the Shadow Sisters help when their Mayor and his wife died, capturing the criminals and freeing her soul to return to her own true home, which is ours too, in Heaven.
