Favela becomes loud and festive during weekends when our farmers, factory, hotel, supermarket etc. workers and white collar employees have done their fill to help Brazil's economy. I have experienced being part of drinking and karaoke sessions in Manila bars or comedy clubs but not in Favela.
Here men would drink beers or Everyday Baker gins, hard liquors to welcome the weekend with bright lights, good, spicy foods and liquor. In Santa Marta, Cantagalo and Vidigal, some of the safest places to reside in Rio, people can buy a house that can cost $700,000 if you are that filthy rich.
Since most towns in Brazil during the 90's up till 2013 are populated, Favela is one of the unsafe, unsanitary and congested towns which St. Clare chose to help and provide for during the civil wars.
So, now, I am with the women in Favela, seated with sisters, Jona, Teresa and Paula, finishing our beers while listening to some Coachela music to cheer and lighten each's load and tired bodies from their day jobs in the fields or in factories.
Lyka, who many consider as their grandmamma in the streets of Favela, stand as their beacon of light and love since she cares for every one especially those who eat at her restaurant and drink her beers.
Grannie, can you take Greta's sister to work in your resto? She is a good soul and a good cook too!, Jona said while sipping her foamy beer. Well, Kyke mentioned about Greta and her siblings that they needed a place to crash or work at. Hmm, I have thought of it, really, since I help many kids and send them to school while doing a part-time job here at the resto. So, yes! I'd be happy to house and help them! It's not a problem, hihi!, Lyka said and drank her beer with us. At this age, she is still strong and sharp, no one can fool her with money and beat her in handling difficult customers. She owns a shot gun too that shocked many customers especially that goons that tried and keep on harassing her place just to loot food and money from her. Poor Grandma!, Beca thought.
Greta have been silent after the incident with the tornadoes but she always is present in community activities, prayers, practices and trainings. She is letting out a long and fulfilling sigh as she drank her beer and laughed along with the women dancing and singing their hearts out in the festival.
Favela's Coachela is amazing and fireworks lit up the sky like the stars that twinkle and explode with wonder and colorful hues which I always experience every New Year in the Philippines.
Hmm...it is comforting that people here are not so different from Filipinos who love feasts and food, music and romance.
Aha, want to try getting cheesy with me?, a man's voice whispered while I drank the last sip of my beer. Huh! What the f^ck are you talking about?, I think I might have drank too much now that I got pissed off so suddenly!
Ah...it's Kyle, by the way! And yours, ma'am?, Commander Fonsi said smiling.
Ahh..the devil in sheep's clothing, the leader of Canudos. And what are you doing here? No women getting your fancy in these part of Favela?, I added teasing him just like old times. We were best of friends then and now, I think.
Well I already got my eye on one girl here but she is just too picky and doesn't want to give in to my temptations and...., Kyla said jokingly. But...
So, maybe, we can today!, I said seriously moving closer to his face and telling him it's okay to make out somewhere.
Hmm...nope, not today! You're drunk and I don't really like the smell of their beers here! Anyway, have fun and see you around sister! Stop drinking, it's bad for your health!, Kyle added and walked away. He then stopped at the end of a tunnel where his men are having a drink with Banes and held on to his chest to breathe and relax. What's got into her? She's never this blunt or honest about her feelings and all. Ahhh, I must be drunk with the smell and spirits of alcohol in the whole of Favela. Must be the beers and gins, curse them for making me believe that Beca really cares and still loves me, hmp!, Commander Kyle Fonsi thought and Banes interrupted his anxious qualms about himself or whoever. Sir!, are you okay>m Banes said and tapped his shoulder. Ah, yes, Banes, carry on! I just need a breather, I must be tired from the meetings today. So, I'll go ahead with you guys, Goodnight!, Kyle added, walked towards the street where their barracks is located and disappeared through the night.
Wait, sir, it's dangerous to walk alone in the middle of a festive occasion here, I will accompany you to your room at the camp!, Banes insisted and followed Kyle.
No, I'll be fine and ....., Kyle wasn't even finish talking when a guy tried to grab him from the back and another in front to punch him multiple times. Kyle was able to dock and gave a right hook to the guy in front of him and he fell down. The guy from the back pulled something sharp that Kyle's shadow, his face can be seen in the knife's blade. Kyle is prepared to die anyway, so, he tried to move away and carefully watched the man as he ran towards him and strike his side to kill him. Kyle was about to dodge away from the stalker's knife but a shadow so fast caught up with the man and instead of hitting the commander, the stalking fell on his knife and died on the spot. The shadow who jumped over to stop the stalker, fell from the sky and moved closer to Kyle, who is speechless and amazed by what this mythical spirit did to save him.
Ah, thanks!, Kyle said and the shadow moved so close that Kyle saw its eyes. They are colored brown and blue sort of like Beatrice's eyes and it suddenly struck me. These shadow Sisters have been the talk of the town for many months now and in the whole of Brazil they are very popular, I didn't think she would save me. Beca?
