I fixed my hair into a side braid just to get it out of my face. I slipped on my black converse and went out on my front porch.
I saw luke's car pull into my driveway. he was wearing a shirt with some band that i had never heard of before on it.
"hey!" i said and gave him an awkward side-hug.
we walked to his car and i hopped into the passenger's seat.
"so. where are we going?" i asked as luke sang along to the song playing on the radio.
"um, this sounds really dumb but there's this diner that me and my friends would go to when we were little. it reminds me of home and i don't know i just thought you would like it we don't have to go-"
"luke! it's fine. I'm sure its a really nice place." I reassured him.
"okay okay." I was going to start a conversation but he was too busy singing along to this song.
"what song is this?" I questioned.
"oh, it's called car radio. funny right?" he giggled. a few more songs played and then we finally pulled into the parking lot of the diner.
-
"so, what would you like?" luke asked me while staring at his menu.
"I think I just want a burger and fries. that sounds really good." I said, practically drooling over the thought.
the waitress came to our table and took our orders.
"aw, you two make such a cute couple!" she said. I started to correct her when luke interrupted me.
"thank you! we're very happy together." he said, grabbing my hand. I just nodded and smiled.
"you two lovebirds have fun. your orders will be out shortly." said the waitress, walking away from our table.
"why'd you go along with it?" i questioned.
luke thought for a second, "it saved her from the embarrassment of getting it wrong and I didn't want to be rude." he said.
luke laced his fingers with mine and just smiled. I'm pretty sure my cheeks looked like tomatoes but I didn't care.
"oh okay." I smiled.
"sorry if I, like, made you uncomfortable or anything," he said, not making eye contact with me.
"no you didn't. I promise, its fine." I assured him.
"I just don't want things to be awkward." he said. I squeezed his hand and shook my head. I'm actually surprised that this isn't awkward for me.
"here you are, enjoy yourselves!" said our waitress.
"I hope you like it, this is my favorite restaurant." luke said while I was shoving my sandwich in my mouth.
"it's really good," I mumbled through a mouthful of food.
we continued eating, laughing at each other and talking about the most random things, until a perfectly manicured hand appeared on luke's.
"hey lukey." said a girl I didn't recognize.
"india. don't call me that." luke dryly replied, not looking at her.
"well, that's no way to talk to your girlfriend." she said. I tried not to laugh but I couldn't help myself. that earned me a death look from india.
"ex-girlfriend. and god knows why that even happened in the first place." he said.
"who's this? my replacement?" india said, pointing to me.
"winter." luke said, grabbing my hand.
"are you two, like a thing?" india asked, scowling at me.
"so what? it's none of your business." luke replied.
"I knew you two were banging," india smirked. "slut." she hissed at me.
luke's grip on me loosened and he stood up, towering over india.
"don't you dare call her that. ever."
"luke, don't bother." I muttered, attempting to grab his hand.
"actually winter, I will bother!" he turned to india again.
"I swear to god if you start one rumor about her, you'll wish you never opened your mouth. get the hell out of here and stay out of my life."
india just rolled her eyes. "fine. have fun with this whore, and just remember that you could've had me instead." she smirked.
I was waiting for luke to blow up on her again.
"I'll remember that I could've had you and thank god I don't." india just walked away with a scowl on her face.
I hugged luke tightly. "thank you." I said. he just hugged me tighter.
"winter?" luke said as I drank my tea.
"yeah?" I replied.
"I'm really happy that we're friends. thanks for replying to that text and not blocking my number."
I laughed, setting down my cup of tea.
"you're really important to me and if you wouldn't have replied, I probably would be the same person I was before. drinking, sleeping around with girls and going to clubs."
I could feel all of the heat in my body rush to my cheeks. I grabbed luke's warm hand and smiled.
"you mean the world to me and I care about you too much for my own good. I would be so lost without you. thank you." he said so quietly that I could barely hear.
"you're wonderful." I said softly.
"you mean the literal world to me, winnie."
