Flames filled my vision as I moved along, wheezing and stumbling. I crashed, dragging myself towards the water. I slipped into the cool water and shoved my body underneath. Moving through the water and spotting a cave, it was nestled by the water, and water moving into it. I climbed inside.

A little squeak caught my attention, but I was too desperate to hide away from the heat of the flames and smoke. It was cool inside, I took deep breaths and relaxed in the cool water, my head resting on a damp rock. I become slowly aware of something hitting against me, something moving. I looked around and slowly got up, the sound of splashing and gasping for breath was heard. I looked back, seeing a creature grab onto a rock and panting, that must have been what squeaked.

I was staring at it, it was one of those skin creatures, ugly things. It moved away from me, seeming to be shaking and coughing.

I must have accidentally laid on it, possibly nearly drowning it. Usually, I don't like skin creatures, with their pointy sticks and violence. This one was all alone, away from its pack. I won't lie, I've killed a few of them before, but that was in self-defence when I've been attacked. Maybe it was split from its pack because of the fire.

I Ignored it, I didn't want to go out into the fire. I relaxed in the water. Listening to it retreat further against the rocks.

*"Get out monster! Go away"* it barked. I grumbled in annoyance. Such an annoying noise it makes.

"Shush! I'm trying to rest, annoying beast" I mumbled. Shaking my head and breathing in the cool air.

I woke up to the sound of crackling, the fire still blazing strong. It's not a normal fire after all, it's a firestorm, and they last for a while.

*"I'm hungry"* I could hear quiet barking and sighed, sitting up, a squeal sounded and the creature scrambled away, the cave wasn't big. The creature was roughly half my height, pressing against the back of the cave and watching me. I snarled slightly, the ugly little thing was trembling. Drenched in water and cowering on a rocky ledge, I prefer being in the water, though I know I'm blocking the exit, and maybe I would move, but with the fire storm still blazing, I don't want to risk getting burnt.

It seemed to retreat further by cowering, curling into a little ball. Curiously I examined it, pushing the skin creature, it fell sideways, laying flat and trembling, seeming frozen.

*"Go away monster!"* It barked, and I scowled, its bark is such an annoying sound.

"Quit barking" I snapped, glaring at the thing as it rolled into another ball, making tiny noises, a slight whimper being heard. This is the closest I've been to a skin creature, while it's alive. It was rather pathetic and puny looking, shivering. I chose to ignore it. We can wait out this storm, without terrifying a puny skin creature.

I ignored it as I stared at the smoke and flames, slowly dying out, but I'll stay in the cave, only going out for food, it'll take a while for the smoke to settle, and the ground will be hot, so maybe some fish will do.

As soon as the orange light of the flames dimmed, I swam out, searching for fish, which was easier than predicted, easily impaling them on sticks and cooking them over dying flames. I lugged my fish sticks back to the cave and settled looking at the smokey air and eating my food. I looked over at movement, the skin creature reaching for one of my sticks, I growled, turning on them. They scrambled back, cowering on their rock ledge, trembling.

*"I'm sorry, I won't touch your food!"* It barked, seeming to be panting, I snarled, why didn't the creature just leave when it had the chance? It held up its hands as if to protect its head.

"Why don't you just...!" I began, looking at the ash-covered hands that blocked its face, its skin looking red. A little puddle developing under it, I moved back, taking a deep breath. It seems the creature did try to leave, but couldn't handle the heat. I suppose I shouldn't throw a temper at a hungry animal. I held out a fish stick, it trembled and had it's eyes closed. I set the stick next to it, away from the pee and went back to eating the rest of my food. I looked over at the sound of chewing, the creature eating the cooked fish, red faced and whimpering.

*"Where is my family"* it quietly barked. I chose not to yell about the annoying sound, the little thing seeming much more pathetic the more I hung around it, it hadn't attacked me yet, maybe it was young and not a fighter.

I looked away and began having another rest, I was tired.

When I woke up again, the stench of piss was becoming unbearable. I clenched my sharp teeth, choosing to stay quiet and not be snappy, I caused the creature to pee itself, I shouldn't lash out.

The air from the outside was cool, a rain must have started at some point while I was unconscious. It was ending now, the ground must be cooled down and the smoke washed away. I climbed from the cave and looked around. Ready to continue moving along, I looked back as the creature climbed from the cave, stumbling from the water and onto the ash-covered ground, curiously, I watched it, it looked around desperately.

*"Someone! Where are you"* it loudly barked, it really is an annoying noise. I turned away, I will need to keep moving. I perked up at a new noise, it seemed the creature barking had attracted something, probably something that had hidden from the firestorm and was very hungry. The skin creature squealed, I watched the big cat jump through some burnt branches, charging at the creature.

Oh well. Everything needs to eat. It's just the way of life, the weak get eaten by stronger creatures. Plus it's annoying and loud and an ugly, cute thing.

I stepped onto the ash-covered bank and watched the big cat chase it. I scowled, snarling deeply, both creatures freezing. The skin creature cowered as I stepped closer, pulling its body against mine, the big cat backing away, my neck flaps raised as I snarled.

The big cat turned and fled. I can't believe I did this, but I couldn't see myself letting it die, not after being around it to wait out the storm.

I turned, moving to leave, I stopped, glancing back, the creature following me. Oh no, do skin creatures imprint or something? I don't have time to baby some young creature.

I tried to shoo it.

It took a few steps back, looking up at me, I looked around in confusion and back down to the creature.

"Only until we find your pack" I muttered, listening to it follow me. The creature was persistent, lightly holding onto my tail, curiously, I wrapped the tip of my tail around its neck, leading it behind me as it continued holding my tail, not seeming afraid of the hold I had on it.

Suppose I could live with this for a short while... I looked back at it once more, it was staring at me still, wide-eyed and shaky. Becoming a little bit more cute in my eyes.
