I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at Troy. He looked completely lifeless.
My thoughts went back to the warehouse... I've been going over this whole picture over and over again. I remembered what Troy looked like: covered in blood and almost unconscious... How calm Jake stood and looked at it... How Aron talked to me, how he wanted to shoot, how I didn't let him do it... I had no choice, I had to kill him....
Suddenly it dawned on me. Sure. Aron. I shot him, but I hit him in the neck. He's probably already converted. And Rob... he wasn't released either. Of course, mentally he didn't bother me as much as Aron, but he was no less dangerous for the ranch.
I quietly entered the warehouse. Rob was already wandering down the hall. After shooting him in the back of the head, I did not wait for the body to fall, and immediately went to Aron.
He was standing with his back to me and, catching the edge of his hoodie on the door handle, was frantically banging on the wall. There was blood everywhere. I pointed the gun. And I squeezed my eyes shut. And I couldn't. I stood there for a couple of seconds and silently watched his ridiculous movements...
It was only after a couple of minutes that I was able to approach Aron. I turned him around to face me. His eyes seemed to be covered with a veil, and his mouth made hissing, growling sounds. In fact, apart from his appearance, little has changed. He was still trying to kill me, just like before. It's just that it's active and unconscious right now. If you think about it, there was more darkness than light in our relationship. But there were good things, and I tried to remember something. However, nothing had time to come to mind, because Aron reached out to grab my shoulder, but I recoiled. He flew past and fell, turning his back to me again. I raised my hand with the gun again. I did it this time.
Now he's actually dead.
I sat down on the bloodstained floor, soiled my trousers, threw away the gun and looked at the exit.
Rob's corpse was lying right in the doorway. After that, my gaze fell back on Aaron's body. I did it. Of course they deserved it, but I did it. And I wasn't hurt or ashamed at all.... I felt calm. I freed them. In the new world, this is the pinnacle of humanity. Perhaps it even pulls at redemption.
The light bulb on the ceiling began to blink. Ironically, it was like an SOS signal. I laughed. Then the light went out completely.
I sat in the dark for a long time because I didn't have the strength to get up. My condition was like a trance. I woke up to the bright light of a flashlight pointed at my face. It was Nick.
"Della, what are you doing here?"
"And you?" I smiled at him.
"I was thinking about Rob and Aaron... I decided that we need to free them before they kill all the inhabitants of the ranch, but I see that you have already done everything," he shifted the beam of the flashlight from one body to another, "are you all right?"
"No."
"How's Troy?"
"I don't know. Maybe when I get back to our house, I'll find the same thing there," I nodded at Aron, "and I'll have to do it again. But I don't think I can do it with him.... Will you do it?" I looked at Nick, raising an eyebrow questioningly.
"Stop it, he's not going to die," Clark waved his hand, "nothing can kill Troy."
"I'm so tired of this," I rolled my eyes, "do you think it will ever end?"
"Of course," he feigned optimism in his voice.
"I don't think so. Eventually, someone will put a bullet in my head. And this will be the best ending..."
