Kai heard a thud and awoke with a start.
He looked to the clock on his nightstand - 2am.
None of the ninja should be awake right now.
Yet when he looked out the window in his bedroom, he saw someone in a black hoodie leave the monastery.
He quickly slipped on his shoes and a jacket and quietly went outside to follow them.
He kept a safe distance. so whoever it was couldn't hear him.
He followed them down the steps and onto the streets of the city. When they reached an apartment building, the person looked around to make sure no one was following them, and went inside.
Of course, Kai went inside too.
When he got inside, he noticed them go up the stairs.
He went up the stairs.
And another set of stairs.
And another.
And maybe one more.
The person went all the way to the top. Like, the literal top. As Kai opened up the door and stepped out onto the roof, the person jolted and turned around.
It was Cole.
"Jesus Kai, you scared me to death."
"Sorry."
"Why were you following me?" he asked.
"I didn't know it was you." Kai replied.
"Who else would it have been?"
"I don't know, not you?"
Kai walked over to sit next to Cole, who's feet were dangling over the edge of the building.
"Isn't that kind of dangerous?" Kai said, pointing to Cole's position.
Cole shrugged. "I do it all the time."
"Whoa, how many times have you been out here?" Kai asked.
"Like, this month or all time or what?"
"All time."
"Uhm, let's see here, somewhere around 150?"
"How has no one woken up?" Kai said, showing his surprise on his face.
"I'm usually quiet. But I forgot I fell asleep with my chromebook in my lap and when I got up it fell on the floor." Cole explained.
"Oh."
Cole laid down.
Kai did too.
Kai's hand found Cole's hand and they interlocked.
It was a good thing it was dark out, because Cole felt his face turn red.
There were a few moments of silence.
"Why do you come here?" Kai asked.
"Well, um, it's peaceful, it's, uh, nice?"
"Cole..."
"This is the apartment that I lived in with my mom before she died. And the last place me and my dad were together." Cole confessed.
"And that makes you feel good? Doesn't it just make you sad and angry?"
"I mean, sometimes. And then I let my anger out in...other ways." he said, glancing over at the door.
Kai was just noticing that their were scratches and marks all over it.
"That was you?" Kai asked.
"No."
"That was very unconvincing."
"As long as it convinced you, it doesn't matter if it was convincing or not." Cole responded.
"That makes no sense at all."
"Exactly." Cole said with a smile.
"And, um, how are you barefoot?" Kai asked.
"I don't know, I just got used to it. Also our shoes are by the front hall and that's next to Nya's room, so..."
"I get it man. My sister can be freaking scary."
Cole laughed. "You got that right."
They gazed at each other for a few seconds, and then, realizing they were staring at each other, looked away blushing.
The truth was, Kai had always liked Cole.
More than a best friend.
And the truth was, Cole had felt their relationship becoming something more than just friends.
But was he telling himself the truth?
He always knew he was gay, but never thought about Kai like that...until now.
Kai had figured himself out because of Cole.
Cole was the first boy he had ever liked, and even though he tried to be in a relationship with Skylor, ultimately he decided he couldn't pretend anymore.
Something came over Kai.
"Can I kiss you?"
"Um, what." Cole said surprised, and his face flushed a deeper red.
"Can I kiss you?" Kai repeated, moving closer to Cole while sitting up.
"Do you actually want to?"
"Why else would I say it?" Kai murmured as he inched closer.
"Uh, I don't know."
"Can I kiss you?" Kai said again.
Cole finally gave in. "Please." he whispered.
Kai pressed his face on cole's and they kissed like there was no tomorrow.
When they finally parted, they both breathed two words.
"Thank you."
