just a short i-don't-know-what

enjoy!

--------------

the most vivid memory he has of Kai was

in second grade

when

they had that lockdown

and he was so scared

it was so dark

and he hated the dark

because he was afraid

of what he would think

was hiding in

the dark

but the brown haired boy

sat down right next to him

and hugged him

before it was weird

before you would've been called

gay

if you were a boy

and you hugged

another boy

before you would've been

bullied

picked on

hated

because

you

liked

boys

before you would've been

scared to hug a boy

even if

a part of you

really

really

wanted to

"Lockdown! Lock, lights, out of sight! Lockdown!"

The message repeated itself over and over and over on the loudspeaker.

Every person around him stopped, as if someone had hit the pause button on the PE class.

He halted mid-run, trying to tag the person he was chasing.

This wasn't anything new. Being in 2nd grade, they didn't really know why they did it, or why they had to be scared of people coming into the school, but they just did it.

It was always in the classroom though.

Even if the teacher closed the blinds on the windows, a little light always seeped in, pooling on the floor.

"Okay! Everyone, follow me! We're headed into the equipment room!" Her voice was loud and clear.

As they filed into the room, he aimed for the farthest back corner, which he successfully secured.

He sat down and brought his knees up to his chest.

Someone came and sat next to him, but Cole couldn't recognize him in the dim light.

Then the teacher closed the door.

He became aware of just how dark the room was. The only light was the little tiny red dot on the phone hanging on the wall.

The room felt smaller than before. Was that just his imagination?

Were the walls really closing in on him?
