The night before whatever is yet to happen the next day is always the worst. No matter if it's about excitement—you can't sleep from the feeling—or for an upcoming exam, for example—again, you can't sleep from the feeling. We, as humans, are adjusted to anticipate and worry about the unknown, and this inherent aspect of our nature often intensifies on the eve of significant events. The night before holds a unique atmosphere, laden with a mixture of anticipation, anxiety, and sometimes even a touch of exhilaration.
In the case of joyful events, such as a celebration or a special occasion, the excitement can be palpable. It's as if the anticipation creates a restless energy that keeps us tossing and turning in bed. Thoughts of what lies ahead play out like a vivid movie in our minds, making it challenging to shut off and embrace the restful oblivion of sleep.
On the other hand, when faced with challenges or responsibilities awaiting us the next day—be it an exam, a job interview, or any other demanding situation—our minds tend to engage in a relentless cycle of thoughts. The looming uncertainty amplifies stress and can lead to a sleepless night as we grapple with imagined scenarios and potential outcomes.
It's fascinating how the human psyche navigates this delicate balance between excitement and apprehension. In these moments, the night becomes a canvas for the emotions that color our experiences. Despite the exhaustion that may accompany the lack of sleep, there's a certain raw authenticity to this prelude that is uniquely human.
And well, in this case, Jeongguk couldn't sleep. It wasn't that he's never gone through exams or that he's never been stressed before. He would deal with those issues. But tonight, the second he tries to close his eyes, he feels like he will throw up.
Jeongguk's room was cloaked in the soft glow of a solitary desk lamp, the dim light casting elongated shadows across the walls. The silence that enveloped the space seemed almost deafening, amplifying the incessant hum of thoughts swirling in Jeongguk's mind. The weight of anticipation hung heavily in the air as he stared at the ceiling, a canvas for his restless contemplation.
The looming exam, usually a challenge he'd face head-on, now felt like an insurmountable mountain.
As he lay there, restless and wide awake, Jeongguk's mind became a battlefield of conflicting emotions. Every attempt to quiet the anxious whispers in his head only seemed to amplify them. The room, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage enclosing his apprehensions.
So, he called Taehyung.
It was around 11 p.m.Nothing is too late. But he promised himself, as Taehyung did so too, to go to bed early in order to get enough sleep.
''Jeongguk?'' Taehyung picked up almost 10 seconds later.
''Are you asleep?'' Jeongguk asked, still in bed, his voice a bit rough.
''Not really.'' He heard the other sigh.
''I can't seem to shut my brain off,'' Jeongguk admitted, running a hand through his disheveled hair. The soft glow from his phone illuminated his face in the dimly lit room.
''Same here,'' Taehyung replied, sympathy lacing his voice. ''Exam jitters?''
''Yeah, it's like my brain decided to have a party right when I needed it to chill out,'' Jeongguk chuckled weakly, a hint of nervousness still evident in his tone.
Taehyung let out a low, understanding hum. ''I get it. It's like our minds conspire against us on the night before something important. So, what's keeping you up?''
Jeongguk sighed, trying to find the right words. ''I don't know, Tae. It's just... everything. The pressure, the fear of messing up. It's like I'm carrying the weight of the whole semester on my shoulders.''
