I GRAB THE THING I FOUND IN THE tomb: a fed-ex package, which reads, 'dear bird'. I poke my arm through the hole, swiftly handing it off to John B.
I don't know why there's the word 'bird' on the package, but it clearly means something. Maybe it's, like, John B and his dad's code word.
"This is from my Dad." John B informs with a soft smile on his face.
Bright lights flash into my eyes, causing my head to snap away from John B. My body tenses as I realize someone is driving towards us. It's definitely the burley men.
"Code red! Code red! Code red! Square groupers!" I repeat, turning on my heel and ushering everyone out of the driver's sight.
"Go! Go!"
"It's the guys that robbed your house!" JJ tells John B as he pulls me behind the stone wall, which I'm sure is invested with all sorts of spiders.
"Lights." Kiara murmurs. "John B! John B, your light!" She scolds quietly as John B struggles to turn his light off, which could possibly reveal our hiding spot to the burley killers.
"Give me it," I yank it out of John B's grasp, not really being in the mood to get shot tonight.
As I inspect John B's flashlight, which has a head strap, I realize the button to turn it off is jammed, meaning it won't shut off. I quickly try hiding it in my shirt, but the light is so bright that it shines right through the thin fabric. I mentally curse as I pull it out from under my shirt, balling my fist up, not seeing any other solution than to punch the light out. I punch into the glass, pain engulfing my knuckles, which are already messed up from the window earlier. I silently wince as I jerk my arm away, shaking my hand, desperate to relieve the pain. To my relief, though, the light went out, causing everything around us to go pitch dark. All I can see is the moon above and JJ's boot, which I'm accidentally stepping on.
"Do you think it's them?" Kiara asks, worry laced in her voice as me and JJ peer out from behind the wall slowly, wanting to get a better look.
"Homie's gotta gun." I mutter, spotting a rifle in the man's hand. I am not trying to go out with a bang, and I'm not meaning figuratively. If I were to get shot, that would be, like, my biggest fear. I narrow my eyes, attempting to see if the man holding the rifle is one of the square groupers. Unfortunately, it's too dark to get a good look, so I'm gonna just assume it's the bad guys.
"Screw this." Kiara abruptly murmurs, shaking her head as she sprints off.
Not a bad idea.
I instantly trail behind her, fear coursing through my veins and pain shooting throughout my hand. It feels as if my knuckles are about to fall off. I may be being dramatic, though.
I'm not a huge fan of running, but ever since I started hanging out with the pogues, that's all I've seemed to be doing.
I wrap my hands around the bars before hoisting myself over the spiky fence, which I'm pretty sure can kill someone.
A groan escapes my lips as I lower myself onto the ground below, the pressure against my hand not feeling nice whatsoever.
I take a few steps back, watching as the boys follow behind. John B and JJ effortlessly throw themselves over the fence, desperate to get away from the burley men.
Pope on the other hand, isn't getting over so easy. His shorts are currently stuck on one of the spikes, causing him to hang from the fence.
"Guys! Guys! I'm stuck! I'm stuck!" Pope repeats, panic and fear laced in his voice as he frantically looks around.
