The four of is into the Love's Truck Stop, occupying four pumps; 2,3,4,5. We all step out of our vehicle's at the same time as if it was a cheesy 90's movie and swipe our credit cards in the pumps, so we can fill up before the race. We all select the Premium Unleaded option because it is the "best" for our cars especially because we are racing. As the gas pumps into the cars, I walk over to Ace's car to check it out because I haven't really done it yet.
Her car is very modified, with a whole new kit that modifies the bumpers, skirts and wing. The wing is a low profile off the back hatch to increase her top speed. She has four alloy BBS 5-spoke rims on over her blue brake calipers with Firestone thin tires. Her windows are lightly smoked and 'Sukōpionzu' is pinstriped on the skirts and two scorpion decals are on each rear fenders just in front of the tail lights.
"I saw you and Fetzer talking about T in his car" a female voice says behind me. I turn around to see Ace siting on the hood of her Civic with Pony standing next to her.
"Ya, me too" he says sadly agreeing with Ace.
"What happened?" I ask
"Well how 'bout we start from the beginning?" Pony recommends. I nod my head and lean against the Civic's passenger door.
Ace turns around to face me, "They met at church when he was a Sophomore and she was a Junior. They fell in love immediately"
"Believe me, he would not SHUT UP about her in class!" Pony exclaims and they both laugh.
Ace continues, "It looked like they had it going for them, after dating for three years and Fetzer still a Senior in high school, he proposed to her on her front porch".
"With that ring that's hanging on his mirror, too!" Pony chimes in.
"He was always very happy, never sad and alway full of life until that day" Ace says and Pony continues.
"After being engaged for a year and almost a month before their wedding, she was driving home after a meeting with the preacher about the wedding. A street racer in a blue Neon slid in a turn and slammed into her head-on at about 100mph and killed her instantly while he walked away from the wreck never to be seen again. Ace, Fetzer and I were the first to respond. Ace called me and Fetzer and we were their in minutes".
"Yeah, I knew it was her car from the emblem on the trunk lid, Volkswagen. I didn't want to go up to the wreck so that's why I called Pony and Fetzer. But man you should of seen him when he pulled up. He didn't even turn the car off, it stalled because he never even shifted out of 5th" they chuckle and she continues, "He jumped out of the car and sprinted to the destroyed and overturned car. I've never seen him run that fast before in his life an that's when Pony pulled up".
Pony continues the story, "After got out of the car, I saw him trying to turn the car over and he had it almost on its side. So I hurried over there a helped him turn it back on its wheels. After we got it turned it over again, Fetzer tore the door off of the hinges trying to get her out of the car. That's when I got my knife out and cut the seat belt so he could get her out. The whole time he is screaming her name over and over to keep breathing, but she was already gone. I could tell. Her face was pale and blood trickled down her cheek from her temple. Thankfully her eyes were shut, but her neck was snapped. It bulged out awkwardly, but he kept crying her name over and over".
"At this moment, I noticed the driver of the Neon had gotten out of the car and was sneaking over to Pony's Chrysler." Ace says, "this was before he had bout his Evo. But anyways, yelled for him to stop but her just sprinted to Pony's 300 and took off. He must have left the car running, so I went off after him in my Civic. When I came back with nothing, Fetzer had already left with the coroner to the hospital."
"So after we got her out of the car and I noticed she was already gone, I tried to pull him off of his fiancé, but he just turned around and socked me in the jaw. I know he didn't mean it, he must not have been paying attention. So he continued crying and holding her limp body in his arms. Before the cops showed up, he had pulled off the engagement ring and kept for himself, in remembrance of her. That's just about what happened..." Pony says sadly and ends the story.
"Oh my god. That's horrible!" I exclaim bewildered.
"Yeah, and the guy was never caught. Took my damn Chrysler, but was never caught" Pony says.
"So why did you guys move out here?" I ask.
"Well, Fetzer moved out here after she died. He says it was to get away from Indiana. He couldn't take the memories anymore. I moved here after New York because I was worried about Fetzer. And so did Pony, after he was trained in drifting" Ace says.
"But if he wanted to forget about it, why does he still have a picture if her and the ring in his car?" I ask.
"Because he LOVED HER!" Pony exclaims, "Don't you get that he continues racing only to get the asshole who killed T? He wouldn't drive for months after 'it' happened!"
"Oh shit" I say astonished.
"Yeah, 'oh shit'" Fetzer's loud voice booms from the trunk of his Trans Am. I notice a silver chain around his neck with a crucifix on it hanging from his neck that I didn't notice before. "I couldn't even look at my car after that wreck. I hated cars, especially fast cars. Pony and Ace made me get back in the car and learn how to drive again. Now I'm back, and better than ever, but if I ever find him, one of us will not come back home... I can swear that".
No one says anything as he turns on his heel and gets inside the Trans Am. The engine roars alive and he peels out of the gas station.
"Come on, let's go" Ace says and we get in our cars, fire up the engines and roll out after Fetzer. We find him at the stop sign before the entrance to I-15; the beginning of the race.
Pony pulls up next to Fetzer and blinks his bright lights. Ace pulls behind Fetzer and flashes her brights. I pull up next to Ace and behind Pony and blink my brights. Fetzer blinks his, and we all switch to high beams and fog lights. The three individually turn on their blue neon that's on the undercarriage of the cars and it illuminates all of the surrounding ground. This is going to be epic.
