Chapter 5 | Belonging

''𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓'𝐒 𝐌𝐘 𝐂𝐔𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐆𝐎, New York," Cole said, winking at Blair. "See ya, Blair." Blair's heart skipped a beat as she watched Cole leave. She turned to Alex, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Was he showing you the horses?" "Yeah," I replied, my voice low. "Just Custard, though.'' Alex nodded, but his eyes remained focused on her. "Murphy is my favorite. Do you want to see him?" I nodded, "Sure, I'd love to."

As Alex led her towards Murphy's stall, Blair couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. She had never been this close to Alex before. "You're gonna have to learn to ride if you're gonna be a real Walter," Alex's playful voice echoed in Blair's mind. She couldn't help but feel a pang of offense. "I'm not a Walter, Alex. I'm a Howard," I snapped, regretting my words almost immediately.

Alex's expression turned guilty, realizing his unintentional remark. "Oh, yeah, sorry about that. I didn't mean to upset you." Blair sighed, feeling a sudden rush of regret for her outburst. "No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap. It's just... I feel like an outsider in this family." Alex's eyes softened, and he reached out to gently touch her arm. "Blair, you're not an outsider. We all love having you here. You're part of our family, whether you realize it or not."

Blair's heart swelled at his words, and she couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she belonged here more than she had thought. As they approached Murphy's stall, Blair's apprehension began to fade. Alex opened the door, revealing a magnificent chestnut horse. Murphy's gentle eyes met Blair's, and she instantly felt a connection.

"Wow, he's beautiful," Blair whispered, her hand reaching out to stroke Murphy's velvety nose. Alex smiled, his gaze locked on Blair. "He likes you." I blushed, feeling a warmth spread through my body. I turned to Alex , her voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you, Alex . For being here. For making me feel like I belong.''

Alex's smile widened, and he took a step closer, their bodies almost touching. "Blair, you've always belonged here. And if you'll let me, I'll do everything I can to make you feel that way." My heart raced.
"Tomorrow will be easier," Alex's voice echoed in my mind. I nodded and walked back into the Walter house

The morning air was crisp and refreshing as I stepped out my room, ready to go for a jog. The previous day had been tough, filled with stress and emotion, and I knew that a run would help clear my head. As I closed my door, I caught a glimpse of a girl rushing out of Cole's room. The look of terror in her eyes puzzled me.

I made my way to the porch, where Nathan was already sipping his morning coffee. I greeted him and casually asked if Cole often had girls over, trying to keep my tone as normal as possible . Nathan chuckled, acknowledging that it did happen occasionally. "I guess he just doesn't want to get caught," he said with a mischievous grin.

I couldn't help but question further, wanting to understand Cole's behavior. "Why is he such a...player?" I asked, struggling to find the right word to describe him. Nathan laughed again, his eyes filled with a mix of understanding and amusement. "Cole has always gotten away with stuff, especially when it comes to girls. But lately, he's been really bad," he explained.

Just as we were discussing Cole's actions, he emerged from the front door, along with Danny. "You're up early," Cole said, noticing my presence. ''So are you''. "Chores," He replies looking back at me.

Nathan talks again, elaborating on Cole's injury. "It's been tough for him. Football was his passion, his escape. Not being able to play anymore is really getting to him," he said, his voice tinged with sympathy.

As I processed the information, a wave of empathy washed over me. I realized that beneath Cole's confident and carefree facade, there were struggles and vulnerabilities that he kept hidden. Perhaps his behavior with girls was an attempt to fill the void left by his inability to play football.
