Beth's POV
"Morning," Kevin says, looking up from doing the dishes as I walk into the kitchen. Violet was painting her nails sitting on the counter."Yeah," I say, glaring at Violet.
"I feel some tension," Kevin says staring at the both of us. "What's going on?"
"I called dibs on Dan and she ignored that," Violet snaps.
"You told Dan I was a fucking virgin," I growl.
"What the fuck Violet?" Kevin yells.
"You always side with her," Violet mutters.
"Because you are always in the wrong," Kevin states.
"Dan won't be with me because of her," Violet argues. "So I just told him she was a virgin and that I was way more experienced."
"Being on your knees all the time isn't something to be proud of," Kevin snaps.
"Dan says she isn't allowed back at the bar," I say. "Or he will call the cops."
Violet rolls her eyes. "He will change his mind eventually."
"He was disgusted by you," I say. "He thinks you a horrible sister."
"You've been talking to him?" Violet questions.
"I went to Emily's night," I tell her.
"What the hell is that?"
Now I'm the one rolling my eyes. "Dan was married and his wife's dream was to open that bar," I explain. "The day after they bought the bar, she had a stroke and fell into a coma. Dan had to pull the chord on her because she had severe brain damage. He named the bar Dan's but I suggested we did a lady's night and name it his wife's name instead."
"Ugh he's a widow," Violet says in disgust.
"Are you serious?" Kevin growls. "That's what you got from that?"
"You can have him," Violet says. "I don't have dead people's sloppy seconds."
"Oh my god," I mutter angrily. "No wonder Grant dumped you."
"He only dumped me because of you," Violet growls. "He wanted me to invite you for a threesome but I knew you were too much of a frigid bitch to do it."
"She was raped," Kevin snaps. "She went through something traumatic so excuse her for not wanting a sex life. Plus Ew she's your sister."
"We wouldn't touch each other," Violet huffs. "Grant would've just fucked us at the same time."
I Blanche disgusted.
"You need to leave," Kevin says to her.
"Are you kicking me out?" Violet growls.
"Yes I am," Kevin spat. "Our parents raised us to always look out for each other and you don't care about anyone but yourself."
"Whatever I will just get a hotel," Violet snaps. She storms away from us and Kevin wraps me in his arms.
"I'm sorry she's a bitch," he says.
"I'm sorry she's your sister," I joke.
*
I've started seeing a therapist. Yes, the therapist Cole suggested. He says that I don't have full PTSD, but that I did go through something traumatic and it takes time to heal.Like Dan said.
That's been happening a lot lately. My mind wandered to Dan. My therapist said it's because I've attached myself to him to seek comfort.
This is understandable because Dan is a good hugger and a great listener.
Anyway, he said that I should start getting healthy and maybe walking every morning to increase my mood.
It's working.
I feel alive when I'm walking and listening to my pump-up music playlist on Spotify. I walk like 3 miles a day.
Today was the hottest day so far, so I tucked on a cap and put on some biker shorts with a sports bra.
I walk past the grocery store and turn onto the street towards the cafe. I get to the cemetery and stop when I see Dan there crouching in front of a grave.
I don't think about it, I just head over towards him. "Hey Dan," I say.
He stands up and I see him wiping away tears. "Shit Beth you scared me," he chuckles, but I could hear the sadness in his tone.
I look over the grave and my heart clenches.
Emily Petrina Kennedy
Loving wife of Daniel Kennedy and Daughter to Jim and Rhonda Swan.
There was a photo frame on top of the stone. I never knew what she looked like till now. She had long blonde hair, light green eyes, gorgeous snowy white skin and a smile that could make everyone else smile.
"She was beautiful," I tell him.
"She was," he croaks.
"You never told me how you met her," I murmur, glancing at him.
"I was rallying against the police," he starts. "Cole was kidnapped at the time and they wanted to make it a cold case."
"I remember that," I say.
He nods. "Emily walked out of the library next door and joined us, I always told her that was when I fell in love with her."
"Love at first sight," I whisper.
"Pretty much," he chuckles. I noticed he had tears running down his face. "We got eloped straight out of high school and a year later she fell pregnant."
My stomach was in knots, knowing how this ended.
"She had a second-trimester miscarriage," he whispers. "We tried after, but I guess it just never was right for us."
"I'm sorry," I say. "That's horrible."
"You know the rest," he says.
I nod. "Yeah."
"I come out here when I'm not feeling great," he admits. "You think my hugs are great, her hugs could make world peace."
He still loves her.
Why did that make me sad?
