Spelling Bee

Aurielle looked at me, with a big toothy smile, so you could see her overbite and kind of crooked teeth. I gazed back at her, with my big toothy grin, benifited from the braces I had in third and fourth grade.

"Aurielle, remember when we sat next to each other at the spelling bee? And you kept spelling all of the words, even though you weren't actually IN the spelling bee?" I asked Aurielle, to break the 'staring at each other smiling' barrier.

"Yeah, why?" She scooped some of her frozen yogurt into her mouth.

"That, that was the day I realized I liked you." I say. "Your laugh's so cute, and your humor, and...yeah."

"Alex...I think that was when I started liking you." She said back. "And you think my laugh is cute? No one thinks that, not even my own mother!"

We laughed at how cheesy we were.

We then finished our frozen yogurt, mumbling to each other through full mouths.

"Come on lovey-doveys, time to go." Elyse came up to our little cafe table.

We threw out our cups and spoons, literally throwing them in, getting dirty looks from the workers. Walking out of the store, I trip on my own two feet, landing arms first into the pavement. Elyse stood there, laughing. Aurielle holds out a hand, helping me up.

"Thanks." I brush the gravel off myself. Once we get in the car, guess who starts rambling on again?

In the backseat, Aurielle takes out her iPhone from the back pocket of her jeans, which is in a hot pink and white Otter Box.

"Hey, Alex, put your number in." She passes me her phone, which is on contacts. Next to my name, is a big green heart. I type my number, and then add a smoochy faced Emoji, and another heart, this time a blue one. I click Save, and then pass her back her phone. "Thanks. Wa...who put the smoochy face? Alex?" She looks at me, knowing it was me.

I shrug, playing it off like I didn't know. "That was there when you gave me it!" I gave her a laugh, and she gives me a playful push towards the window.

I didn't want this car ride to end. But reality bit me in the butt when my mom said we were going to Aurielle's house and drop her off.
