Riley knew she should be excited that her soccer team had won the finals and she had been named MVP of the season. She knew she should be celebrating with her teammates. Yet all she could think about was the disgruntled looks her new hockey teammates had given her at practice today. Riley had missed more practices and a scrimmage because of her soccer team finals and she knew her hockey teammates were unhappy despite Riley being present for both exhibition games. To further complicate matters, Coach V had announced the final line up for the first game of the easons which placed Riley starting in the first line at center. Even Coach V had heard the muttering when she announced this, particularly as Riley had displaced a fourth-year from this position. The team only had one more practice before their first game and Riley was dreading it.
That night Kenny found Riley laying on her bed with headphones on. "Mind if I interrupt?" Kenny asked as she clambered onto the bed to lay next to Riley. "Are you happy with the lineup for the game? Starting center as a sophomore on a new team is pretty impressive!" Riley could tell Kenny was trying to hype her up.
"Yeah I guess so" Riley replied reluctantly. "You?"
"Oh yeah I was fourth line last year so I'm happy to be third line this year. Plus I'm still left wing which is what I usually play."
Riley looked at Kenny seriously "You're gonna kill it. I just wish we were on the same line."
"Maybe next year we will be!" Kenny said enthusiastically.
"I was thinking this year" Riley chuckled "but definitely next year".
A long silence filled the room as their small talk ended. Kenny finally broached the real reason she came in "I heard Claire at practice today..."
"Oh yeah. She's not happy. I think I can rule out her becoming my friend. Along with everyone else."
"I'm sorry" Kenny consoled. " I still think they'll come around once we start playing"
"Mhmm" Riley hummed "We'll see."
Both girls lay deep in thought as they contemplated the coming season and Claire's words when she heard Riley would be taking her spot "Fucking bitch. This is bullshit."
