It turned out the soft glow of happiness faded faster than anyone could have foreseen. Riley hadn't anticipated social media. She vaguely remembered posing for some pictures but nowhere near as many as she was in. Nearly all of them with Sana. Sure, some from the beginning of the night with Ben and friends were there, but so were pictures of everyone sleeping in the living room- Riley clearly spooning Sana. Or the two of them sitting closely together while eating breakfast and sharing food. Arms wrapped around the other while outside in the snow. The number of pictures felt impossible to Riley. She hadn't noticed. Not when she was busy looking at Sana.
Riley knew these pictures had already been seen too since she was first alerted to them by Kenny who had texted her happy new year and mentioned how happy Riley looked in the pictures. Which meant James had likely seen them too. Not that Riley was planning to lie or hide things from James, but having pictures on display was less than ideal. Riley hadn't meant to hurt James. They weren't in a relationship but she knew James was already upset with her for leaving without saying goodbye and thus Riley was already nervous regarding the fallout of the pictures.
This anxiety combined with the fact that James still hadn't replied to any of Riley's texts, including a 'Happy New Year', did not bode well for Riley. Therefore, in addition to sadness about saying goodbye to Ben and her parents, Riley now dreaded returning to school for their game and the remaining two weeks until the rest of the school returned to campus for the spring semester.
