When classes finally resumed on a Wednesday halfway through January, Riley found herself wholly unprepared to shift into an academic mindset given everything going on with Kenny and the unknown with James. As Riley walked into one of her classes, Lifespan Development, she was surprised to see James sitting towards the front of the room with her backpack in the chair beside her. This class was set up with long tables that sat two chairs each and spread from one side of the room to the other in four rows. Unsure of what to do, Riley opted for a table two rows back, diagonal from James, where she could still easily see her.
Not two minutes later however, James looked around, spotted Riley and beckoned to her. As Riley approached, James removed her bag from the chair and said "I saved you a seat."
Confused but grateful, Riley took the seat and said "Thanks. I wasn't sure if you were saving it for someone else or something."
James just shook her head to indicate Riley's assumption had been wrong but neither was able to continue the conversation since the teacher began class then.
Other than a quick "See you later" James and Riley departed after class without further discussion. Riley walked away feeling touched yet bewildered and spent the rest of the day and practice wondering what this meant and how James was feeling.
The overanalyzing, without taking any steps to actually clarify with James, continued into the next day. This time when Riley walked into a class and saw James there, she almost walked back out thinking she must be in the wrong room. This class, Neurobiology, was an elective. How could she possibly share another class with James when they had different majors? Riley even went so far as to ask a boy walking in which class this was only for him to confirm it was Neurobiology.
Beyond confused, Riley headed straight for the desk next to James and said "Hey. What are the chances we'd have two classes together this semester? Crazy, huh?"
James smiled somewhat sheepishly but replied "Yeah. Crazy."
