Every small town has a secret, ours has a game...I squeezed Heather's hand as the ceremony started. The grin on my face making my cheeks ache as one by one our names were called.
"Natalie Willaims,"
"Bishop Moore,"
"Heather Nill,"
"Lilia Sloan,"
I took a deep breath and walked across the stage, shaking the principles hand as I grabbed my diploma- Making my way off the stage.
"Dodge Mason,"
Dodge, that's the new kid who moved here last year. I turned my head to watch him walk across the stage, but I ended up locking eyes with his for a moment before I ran right into Natalie.
"Woah, watch where you're going turbo, we all wanna get out of here as fast as we can."
"Shit, sorry." I apologized, backing up.
"Too busy staring at the new kid again?" Heather asked with a smile.
"We've been telling you to just man up and talk to him this whole year." Natalie noted.
"Yeah, well it's not like he's going anywhere, no one gets out of this hellhole."
"Besides me, I'm gonna go to LA once I win Panic" Natalie laughs.
"But that's beside the point, you missed your high school romance with Mr. Mysterious."
"Romance?" I frown.
"Come on, you guys would be perfect together!" Natalie nudged me.
I met up with my mom as soon as I got out of the building,
"I'm so proud of you honey." She hugged me.
"At least that makes one of my parents." I joked.
"Lilia, your dads a lowlife. Let's not bring his sorry ass up on your big day."
I couldn't help but watch as Dodge left with his mom, my eyes trailing them till they got in his car and drove off.
"Lilia?" My mom snapped me back into reality.
"Hm?"
"What time are you going to that party tonight?"
"What are we toasting?" Bishop asked as he took a seat next to Heather.
"No more Gym." Heather replied.
"No more gym shorts." Bishop smiled.
"No more locker rooms." I added.
We all clinked our cups together and took a sip.
"Ah, here it comes." Bishop warned.
"Final collection, give me your money." Ray said to everybody he passed, making his way to us.
"Finally, final collection?" he shoved the pot of money into Bishop's lap.
"Rules are rules,"
"I' m not even playing" Bishop said uncomfortably.
"Think of it as insurance, it's gonna be one hell of a summer."
"Come on man, I'm not gonna play" Bishop said, letting out a small chuckle.
"We're all playing fucker," Ray grabbed Bishop and pulled him closer.
"Ray," Heather and I said in unison.
"One way or another." Ray said, eyeing Heather.
"A dollar buys you a prayer." He added, pulling Bishop with even more force.
"Ray stop," Heather insisted.
"Y-You want your money? I'm gonna need my arm back." And with that Ray let him go.
"We're just fucking with you," Ray hit Bishop's chest laughing. I rolled my eyes and watched as he walked away.
"Hey," Heather said hitting Bishop's leg.
"A new toast to global amnesia," She held her cup up.
"Selective, there's a few things I'd like to remember." He clinked his cup with hers.
I smiled watching the encounter, Bishop has the biggest crush on Heather. Heather just needs to realize it.
"Ooo, what did I miss?" Natalie asked, taking a seat next to me.
"Oh, we're toasting to a future free of Ray Hall," Bishop smiled.
"Ugh, that guy sucks." Natalie adds, I shook my head in agreement.
I tuned out of the conversation, drinking the beer in my hand as I eyed the crowd. I won't admit I was looking for Dodge, but I was curious if he was gonna come tonight.
Then I notice Natalie throwing her diploma into the firepit.
"Natalie, what the hell!" I shout.
"See it's a toast,"
"Natalie..." Heather threw her head back in annoyance.
"What? It doesn't matter because I'm gonna win Panic." she swayed as she finished her sentence.
"Oh, I love this song, guys come on." She grabbed Heather and I's hands and dragged us to the dance floor.
We spent the night dancing, drinking and laughing. Knowing the fun would soon come to an end when the signs for Panic started.
