The 7 boys watch as Smalls, Benny and I go to knock on Mr. Mertle's house "This is bad...This is very bad" Squint's says before Smalls knocks on the door "Uhm, We brought your dog home" Smalls says and the man looks at us "Hercules? How'd he get out?" He asks "Well what happend was, We hit a ball in your yard...and we tried to get it back" Benny says "So you're the one who's been making all that racket?" Us three nod "Yes sir" I say

"You get it?" He says opening the door wider "Oh uhm yeah" Smalls says as Benny hands the ball to him "Well it's the first time anyone got the best of old Hercules" Mr. Mertle says "Who didn't you just knock on the door? I could have gotten it for ya" From a distance we hear the boys yelling at Squint's

Mr. Mertle then chuckles to himself "Thanks for bringing him home, Come on in" Me Benny and Smalls look at each other and I shrug "He is nice" They nod and we go inside. "You're in trouble aren't ya, son?" Mr. Mertle says looking at Smalls and he nods "Yeah well uh- That was my step-dad's ball....I took it without asking...It was signed by Babe Ruth" He says making the older man smile

"George signed this?" He nods "George Herman Ruth yeah he signed it" Mr. Mertle smiles "I take it back your not in trouble your dead where you stand" He then goes to his shelf and takes something before coming back and pulling up a chair

"Here, I'll trade ya" I look at him "That's really nice of you but that's signed by Babe Ruth" He smiles and holds up the ball "So is this one, With the rest of the 1927 Yankees" Benny takes the ball as we all examine it "Lou Gehrig!" Benny smiles "Look Babe Ruth!" I say and we look back at Mr. Mertle

"But why would you trade, That one's all chewed up" Smalls says letting the man have a chuckle escape his lips "I got a lot of good stuff, Look at that stuff!" He says pointing a bunch of trophies and photos "Besides you need it more than I do" He says as we look at the pictures and trophies he has and I look back at him

"You knew Babe Ruth?" I say "George? I sure did and he knew me He was almost as pretty here as I was I would've broken his record too but" Smalls looks at him "You Went blind" He nods "Yep, He used to crowd the plates of the strike zone almost disappeared, Pitchers hate that That's the way I played 100% all the time, Baseball was life...and I was good at it real good, Then one day pow the lights went out" He says with a smile as Benny looks back up at him

"I don't think we could take this ball" Benny says "I'll tell you what, You three come here once a week and talk baseball with me, We'll call it an even trade" We all look at each other and smile and nod at the idea and Smalls shakes his hand "Deal"
