Drums

I leaned my head back against the wall, thinking about what Sam had said.
I wasn't afraid of water or swimming.
And I definitely wasn't afraid of death. In fact, you could say that I welcomed death.
So was I afraid of life? Afraid of living? Afraid of....love?
Yes.
I was afraid of caring for people again. Whenever I did, people died.
I closed my eyes.

"Are you alright?" Legolas asked me with his clear light voice in almost a whisper.
I opened my eyes and looked up, but he was crouching in front of me, his face inches away.
He was so close that I could smell his sweet breath that smelled of everything I'd ever dream of. I'll try to describe it, but I won't even come close.

He smelled of pine trees, a wonderful sharp and tangy scent, he smelled of fresh air, like a lazy breeze drifting across a plain. He smelled like everything he should, like what I had dreamed about since I was a child.
No one, not even Michael, had fulfilled my dreams like this.
It....it was like home. A home I had never known.

I looked around to see if anyone was watching, but everyone was either sleeping or doing something.

I looked deeply into Legolas's crystal blue eyes.
"No, I'm not alright. I....got scared in the lake. I'm afraid of drowning. And I'm mad at myself for letting it show." I couldn't believe I was telling him that, or telling him a lie. He wouldn't care, or the old Legolas wouldn't.

Surprisingly, he nodded, his eyes filled with understanding.
"It's okay to be scared of something. We all are scared at one point. It'll be alright." He said quietly, reaching out and covering my hand with his.
My eyes widened. He had never been a big fan of contact.
His hand was surprisingly warm as his thumb lightly rubbed my hand.
I looked at him, confused.

He couldn't tell, but I wanted to hug him again, but this time just to breath in the newfound comfort of his scent.

He blushed and looked down, taking his hand away and standing to walk away. He was so adorable when he was uncomfortable.
"Hey."
He turned at my voice.
"Thanks." I said, smiling.
He smiled slightly. "You're welcome."

My heart fluttered in my chest at last after almost 4 years of silence. I missed the feeling, but was I betraying Michael?
My heart fell again as Legolas walked away with his comforting scent. I was alone and cold again.
I fell deep into thought again.

After awhile, I looked up as Gandalf finally spoke.
"Oh! It's that way." He said, pointing to a passageway.
"He's remembered!" Merry said, standing up.
Gandalf smiled. "No. But the air doesn't smell so foul down here." He said, peering down the passageway.
"When in doubt, Meriadoc, always follow your nose." He said, patting Merry on the shoulder before he made his way down the path.

We went through the passageway that was like a tunnel, and it was surprisingly short. It opened up to a big room, I could feel that the room was big because the air didn't feel close anymore.
Gandalf smiled and said, "Let me risk a little more light." He raised his staff and let the light glow brighter.
Everyone gaped in astonishment.

We were in a room that was so huge that you couldn't see the end of it and it had ceilings so high that you could hardly see them. Every few yards, a large stone pillar stood, holding up the ceiling and the pillars were so wide that your arms couldn't even go around them.
"Behold the great realm and Dwarf-city of Dwarrowdelf." Gandalf said in a majestic voice.

We began walking through the center aisle lined with pillars.
As we walked, we noticed a small room off to the right, and on the way to the doorway, there were skeletons littering the ground, just like the entrance to Moria.
Gimli shouted in alarm and ran into the small room, Gandalf shouting after him. We all went into the room.
It was about as big as a small house and there was a stone box in the middle of it.

Gimli knelt in front of it. "No, oh no." he kept repeating and bowed his head, quietly sobbing.
Gandalf walked over to the stone box and read some runes that were carved on the top.
"'Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria.' He is dead, then."
Well, duh the guy was dead, otherwise there wouldn't be bodies everywhere and we would actually have a guide, food, and a place to stay.

Gandalf noticed a skeleton leaning against the casket holding a large crumbling book.
Gandalf handed Pippin his hat and staff and then leaned over and picked up the book and opened it to the last entry.

Legolas leaned over to Aragorn, Boromir and I and said, "We must move on. We cannot linger."
Everything about him was nervous. He couldn't stay still. He kept shifting his feet and looking behind at the doorway. His 'Elvish sense' must be tingling, telling him something was wrong. He was still cute though....
DISTRACTIONS!! Stop it Katherine!!

I took note of his alarm, not cuteness, and turned to look at Gandalf.

He blew dust off of the page and began to read it.
'They have taken the bridge and the second hall. We have barred the gates but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes. Drums....drums in the deep. We cannot get out. A Shadow moves in the dark. We cannot get out......They are coming.'
We all shuddered at those words.

Suddenly, we heard a crashing sound.
I swivelled in time to see the head of a skeleton sitting on the edge of a well fall into the hole. The helmet on the head made clinking noises as it banged against the sides of the well.
Pippin had touched it. HE ALWAYS HAD TO TOUCH SOMETHING!

As he hung his head in shame, I leaped forward towards the well, but I was too late.
The rest of the skeleton fell into the well and the bucket that it was, for some reason, attached to.
We all cringed and glared at Pippin as the objects clunked their way down and finally thumped on the bottom, the sound echoing in every corner of Moria, it seemed.

Gandalf glared at Pippin for a moment.
With his carelessness, Pippin had alerted the enemy that we were there.
Boromir groaned softly, realizing the same thing.

Gandalf slammed the book shut, furious with Pippin.
"Fool of a Took!" He shouted, snatching his hat and staff from Pippin.
"Throw YOURSELF in next time and rid us of your stupidity." Gandalf said angrily.

Legolas was right, we shouldn't have stayed there.

We turned to go, but I stopped when I heard something.
I wiggled my finger in my ear, hoping it was just me.
But it wasn't.
The next time, everyone heard it.

Drums....

Drums in the deep.
