Chapter 12:
Hook
The cool night air blew through my hair causing goose bumps to rise over my skin. I licked my slightly chapped lips and ran my hand through my hair. As soon as I was alone I snuck out of our camp so no one would ask any questions. There was a little something I needed to take care of and it involved a very annoying girl that seemed to take my thoughts captive.
I needed to talk to her about my little plan that she just happened to ruin. It was obvious where she would be, with the savages of course. We set up camp not too far away from them so it wouldn't have taken long for me to find her.
I was right. After what seemed like a half hour of walking I could already hear their drumming. I stayed quiet and watched carefully for any savages. That's when I saw it. The camp was just down the hill. A huge bomb fire blazed and shadows danced around it.
They were celebrating the princess's rescue. This worked out perfectly actually. Everyone will be too distracted to notice my arrival. A smirk formed my lips as I began my journey down the hill. I still kept a careful eye out for scouts that could be hiding in the trees. Not that they would be able to see or hear me anyways.
I barely made it half way there when there was a rustling in the trees ahead of me. I quickly jumped behind a tree peeking around it to see what was there. I pulled my knife out of my boot and waited patiently.
Someone busted through the vegetation and pressed their back against the tree a few feet away from me. My breath caught in my throat once I realized who it was through the darkness. Wendy slid down the tree and sat on the forest floor.
What luck I had tonight. I slid my dagger back in my boot and peeked back at her behind the tree. She pulled her legs in close and stared up at the sky. There was something wrong.
Her eyes were glossy and her cheeks were flushed. She looked sad. It took me everything I had to strode over there and hug her small frame and tell her everything was going to be alright.
I stepped forward to get a better look at her.
Snap
The sound echoed around me and I cursed under my breath at my foolishness. My foot had landed on a loose root. I glanced back at Wendy and she shot up and took a few steps in my direction. So much for the element of surprise.
"Who's there?" Her voice shook and I could tell she was regretting it. I stepped out from the tree but stayed in the shadows. I could see her face clearly; fear coursed through her features yet she didn't run.
I took a step forward and into the light of the moon. Her body tensed as she recognized me. She didn't say a word only stared as if she could see right through me. I couldn't help feel uncomfortable by the thought of her reading through my mask.
"Wendy is it?" I asked through the silence. I looked her up and down and couldn't help notice how beautiful she really was.
"What are you doing here?" She spat at me fury forming on her features. She crossed her arms in frustration which made me smirk. She looked cute when she was angry.
"Well I could ask you the same question." I stated mimicking her crossed arms then leaned back against the tree. She scowled at me then turned around to walk away.
"Wait." I said and she stopped.
"We need to talk." She spun around and gave me an amused look.
"What would we have to talk about?" The sarcasm in her voice was annoying me slightly so I continued on.
"I know it was you who saved the princess today at the falls." I pressed and waited for her to challenge me. She had that quality to her. No matter the situation she seemed to find a way to hold her ground even if there was a possibility that she would lose. It was as if I had met my match but I would never admit that out loud.
