Chapter 18: The Unexpected Rescue Party
Wendy
We trudged forward without stopping. Scorpios was up to his cruel self again. It was a joy to have him as company. He wouldn’t let us stop or take a break no matter how much I whined.
He said we had to get to the Sanctuary before dark and blah, blah, blah. I would never let him know it but deep down I knew he was right. The pirates attacked at night and if we were caught in the middle of the jungle weak, hungry and weaponless- since I fired the last shot in the pistil- we were sure to lose against any fight.
Of course we had Kain but I still didn't know what power the captain had over him because someone didn't want to explain. It was frustrating but I just kept thinking the closer we got to Peter the closer I got to answers... hopefully.
I the closer I got to knowing he was alright. “Wendy pick up your pace you’re falling behind again.” Scorpios grumbled and it took me everything not to wring his neck right then and there.
“I cant help it it's hot and all I’ve eaten today were a handful of berries which were out of season by the way. And it doesn’t help that you won't let me sit for like five seconds.” I complained for the billionth time today.
It wasn't fair, he was probably used to this kind of stuff being raised in this world but me I was raised in the city where food was always in the fridge and the hot water was always on.
Not to mention that it was always cold in London.
“I already explained we have to get there before dark and look the sun is already going down.” I hadn't realized it but he was right, slowly but surely it was getting darker.
“Are we almost there?” I asked hopefully. He didn't answer just slashed through the vines with his sword. I rolled my eyes and stuck my tongue out towards the back of his head.
Kain began to whimper beside me and I looked at him in concern. His ears were flat on his head and he began to walk away.
“Hey big guy what’s wrong?” I tried reaching out to him but he just turned away and ran back the way we came through the thick vegetation until he was out of sight.
I was about to call out to him when I heard Scorpios shooshed me. I turned around about to tell him off when I saw he was crouched staring through a gap between two trees.
“What is...” He cut me off by grabbing my hand and pulling me down beside him. I couldn't help but feel the butterflies in my stomach but quickly ignored it to get a look at what he was staring at.
I stared through the gap and found myself staring at the clearing before the Sanctuary.
A small group of men were in the clearing wearing ripped and dirty clothing with swords strapped to their belts. They had tattooed arms and sweaty, dirty faces that were tanned meaning they must be in the sun a lot of the time.
“Pirates.” Scorpion hissed not sounding too happy. There was no reason to sound happy when pirates were around. Captain Hook stepped out from the shadows of the sanctuary with a sly smile embedded on his lips.
I glanced at Scorpios and I noticed his hand gripping his sword so tight his knuckles turned white. He spoke to the pirates but I couldn't make out what they were whispering about.
Suddenly, a boy with dark tanned skin and a long black braid going down his back emerged from the Sanctuary. An Indian boy not much younger than myself.
