Chapter 3: Mineral Dust

Peter never showed up the night after or the night after that. I was disappointed but something deep inside of me told me to keep the bedroom window unlocked. So each night after my brothers were asleep I tiptoed my way to the window and unlocked the lock.

I knew that he would have to show up sooner or later. What would happen if he did come back? Maybe I'd introduce him to the family.

"Hey guys this is Peter Pan he's the boy in my stories who is actually real. Oh and by the way he can fly and he lives in this place where no one grows up!" I could just imagine my father, stunned and speechless with his jaw hanging to the floor. I'd be shipped off to the nut house before dawn.

Alright, so a definite no to introductions. What if he took me to Neverland. I shook my head from the thought as heat rose to my cheeks. He just met me there was no way... I glanced up at the sky.

The second star to the right and straight on till morning.

Peter's voice rang through my head. What a wondrous place that I could only dream about.

"Wendy finish your dinner." Father's voice broke through my thoughts and I realized that I had been sitting there with my fork halfway to my mouth for who knows how long. From the corner of my eye I saw my brothers snicker silently. I scowled at them and put my fork down.

"I've lost my appetite." I stood up and my chair made a loud screeching noise as I pushed it back in. My parents both gave me odd looks as I cleared my plate and headed for my room.

I charged up the stairs to the nursery and plumped down on the window seat. My book was laying faced down on one of the cushions and I picked it up with a little excitement.

It seemed as if I was lost in the book for hours for the next thing I knew the doorbell rang.

Auntie Millicent was already here to watch over us while mother and father attended another work function. James and Liam were already in their pj's but I hadn't bothered to yet.

I stayed in my jean shorts and t-shirt. It wouldn't make a difference really, he wasn't going to come.

There was a loud yelp that echoed from down stairs and my brothers and I stole a quick glance then charged for the door. John somehow made it in front of me and entered the living room first.

He erupted in laughter but quickly covered it up with a cough. I came in after him and practically burst into laughter myself but quickly cover my mouth with my hand.

Auntie Millicent was propped on top of the chair with fear written all over her face. She was waving her hands in the air as if she was trying to shoo something away. In front of her Nana sat staring up at her in wonder. I completely forgot Auntie hates dogs I was supposed to let Nana out.

Father came running down next and boy did he look angry. "What the bloody hell is going on here?" He snapped looking from Nana to Auntie to us then back again. "Auntie is afraid of Nana." Liam laughed and I gave him a warning glance.

"Again of course it's about the blasted dog!" Father said throwing his hands up in the air.

"Can you all stop bickering and help me!" Auntie Millicent screeched obviously terrified.  Father marched over to Nana and grabbed her by the collar hauling her out the back door.

"Father what are you doing?" The boys pleaded following him in horror.

"It's a dog not a nurse!" He said slamming the door. He chained Nana outside in the yard clearly fed up of the poor thing. If I just remembered to take Nana out maybe father wouldn't be so angry. I knew I was about to hear it so I sprinted up to the nursery in hopes that it would provide some sort of protection from his wrath.
