A quiet little cavern. Merely a pocket of space in between what must be a complex system of caves intertwined, buried beneath the surface where only Pokémon can reach. An empty cave that is undeniably chilling for whoever dares take refuge behind its threshold.

This is your happy place. The place you run away to when the going gets tough, where you can hide away in solitude to make it seem as though life isn't always one step behind you. You're pretty good at handling your emotions. Everyone needs a mental day here and there, but with how carefree your life has been, you've seen no need for expanding upon what is already easy living.

At least, until now. Your life — it's no longer carefree. Now, first thing in the early morning, when you turn to the bathroom mirror, you see a swollen husk of a person waiting to once again be restored. You see the trainer you used to be, the young adult you've always been — yet nothing more. You find no more ambition in your eyes, not enough drive in the way you carry yourself.

You're lacking everything that once made you... you.

And this here. This is your happy place. The only place you can turn to to make the world feel as if it's stopped moving, and that time has slowed to a manageable pace. You don't know when you started calling this cavern your place of escape, but it has stuck with you regardless. The way there and back is practically burned into your subconscious, you could make your way to this cave every time with your eyes closed.

You take it slow and sit down against the cavern wall. Meowscarada follows close behind you, monitoring your every move even as you stare dismissively into her eyes. You get as comfortable as a person possibly can in a room where the walls are made of ragged stone, pulling your knees to your chest and looking blankly off at the way you came in. Morning light flutters down gently on the cavern's opening but never breaks past the threshold, leaving the cave's innards devoid of sunlight. For you, that's perfectly fine. A little darkness mixed with peace and quiet is the way to go when you're in these moods.

Meowscarada plops down next to you, tucking her cape beneath her butt. She doesn't say anything first like she normally does, rather waiting for you to either look at her or say something to her. When you do neither of these things, Meowscarada scoots closer until your shoulders are pressed against one another.

She purposely nudges you again and again, trying to wake you up out of what she assumes to be a trance laden with nothing but depression.

"I don't know what to do anymore, Meowscarada," you whisper, but here in the quiet cave chamber, even a hushed whisper is amplified in sound.

"I don't," you add after a pause, "I really don't. Things keep happening and they don't stop and people keep getting hurt. For starters, I don't even know what's up with you..."

"Meow?" She tilts her head.

"You've been going berserk the past few weeks. For some reason I'm only just now realizing how scared I should be." You roll your shoulders in a half shrug. "I can't be, though. I've known you for too long to be afraid of you in any real capacity."

"Meow-sca."

"Anyway, I know you're pretty smart," you tell her, finally giving her the eye contact she so deeply desires. "It's like a blessing and a curse. On one hand, I've got this crazy-smart cat... but then it's kinda like you're too smart sometimes."

Meowscarada's ears twitch as she listens to you, never breaking eye contact — she's even barely blinking as to never take her eyes off of you.

"For example," you begin with a sigh, "you can read and write in perfect English. No clue where in the world you started learning a language that should be impossible for Pokémon to grasp, but here we are."
