"Good?"
Are you? You don't know. A second ago, you were in Meowscarada's body slaughtering everything with a pulse. So no, you think. You're not good.
But you tell Avery otherwise, as to not worry the poor girl. "I'm fine."
"Yeah right. You were standing here all spaced out, eyes goin' wacky and everything." Avery takes it upon herself to usher you down to the ground. "Sit down, dude." You listen and obey, planting yourself there on the surface of the blocky white wall. Cold energy touches you through your clothes, an uncomfortable shudder tickling your flesh.
"I was using this thing," you say, pointing your eyes at the Synchro Machine in your hand. "This, uh... sync thing. Guess I got too deep in it."
No. It was Meowscarada's fault. Thank God Avery woke me back up. If I had to see one more dead body...
Avery sits beside you, scooting close. "I could tell." Her eyes also flick down to the machine. "I tried that. Didn't work for me."
"Why not?"
She shrugs. "Dunno. They said it should've worked flawlessly, that this was the only time it didn't connect a person to their Pokémon." Avery pauses to laugh, brushing loose locks of hair away from her face. "I made a joke about not being human, and that's why it didn't work."
"Weird."
"Where's the crazy cat?"
Crazy cat. Yeah, that's one way to put it. The crazy cat who rips throats out and grinds small birds into guts and bones. Yeah, she's one crazy cat alright. Just a real silly goober.
You stifle a scoff at Avery's words, then roll your shoulders in a gentle shrug as if you never cared.
"Thanks to you, we got disconnected early. She's up on that mountain by the spring." You turn to the coastal horizon, haunted by the thought of how many lifeless bodies must be sitting at the peak of that hill. "If I had to guess, I'd say she'll show up any second—"
"Meow."
"—now."
There she is. Walking nonchalantly back from God-knows-where. You didn't see her descend the mountain, didn't come strutting from across the field, she just... appeared. Avery turns around, not quite shocked by the feline's appearance as usual. Like it's second nature to her, she expects Meowscarada to pop up out of thin air.
"There she is!" Avery stands up, grinning from ear to ear as she goes to pet Meowscarada's head. "What's up, big girl?"
Meowscarada grumbles, the girl's hand falling on the top of her head and ruffling her fur. Just from a glance she couldn't be any more upset. To be petted by someone who isn't you? Unheard of!
"Scar... scarada."
"Still not a fan of me, eh?" Avery chuckles at Meowscarada's piercing expression, those lips pulled into a tight, salty scowl. "That's okay. You're still my favorite."
Meowscarada pushes past your friend, traveling to you instead. She yanks you by your forearm, pulling you to your feet and into a sudden embrace. Your face instantly goes smashing into her fluffy chest as she holds you away from Avery with vigilance. Like it's her job.
"Ah," Avery sighs, "possessive as ever, I see."
"Get off, get off!" You grunt and back out of her arms, spitting out little tufts of her fur. You manage to separate, but Meowscarada still feels compelled to grapple onto your arm in order to keep you close. There's no way she's letting you and your buddy reconnect.
