"... just kidding, Master! Jeez, you're so easy to scare." Meowscarada playfully punches your shoulder. "Should've seen your face. My cute, gullible boy." She wiggles your cheek between her fingers, kind of like how a grandma might pinch their grandchild's cheeks playfully. But having been called a boy, you feel yourself visibly cringing. Your face crumples like a ball of wet newspaper and you brush away Meowscarada's paw.

"I don't know," you say, "I don't think you're kidding. Plus, I barely know how to feel about all this. Should I be excited about the fact you can talk or afraid because you sound verbally passive-aggressive... with a hint of murder?"

"Hint of murder," Meowscarada echoes, giggling. "You're funny, Master."

"I'm being serious."

"Anyway, I've been thinking..."

"Hey, don't change the subj—"

"Human and Pokémon marriage is a thing, right?"

The question hits you like a bulldozer. At one point you're trying to keep your partner on track, then at the next, you're looking totally dumbfounded at what you just heard. Human and Pokémon marriage. Of course she'd be the first to pose a question like that. You're hardly surprised at the mention itself; you're more shocked at the fact it took her this long to say it in the first place. You stare into her eyes, attempting to read any trace of jesting, but her emotions are genuine. So was the question.

"Wha—I don't... I don't know?" Really, you don't know what you could possibly say to a question like that.

"Honestly," Meowscarada says, looking off to the cavern ceiling. "I coulda swore I read something somewhere about interspecies marriage..."

"It, uh, it's just a folktale. Humans don't marry Pokémon."

"Well, they can. Technically. Right?" Meowscarada leans in. "Hypothetically—say you and I get married. Who's stopping us?"

You don't really want to humor such a question. But you know, all things considered, Meowscarada would never drop a subject like this. Even before she could speak, she'd make it abundantly clear what topics tickled her fancy at all the wrong times. Naturally you've always found yourself deep in her line of fire when it comes to things like this. Questionable topics — love, marriage, even sex — regarding both humans and Pokémon is something Meowscarada has always had a keen eye on. Now that you're alone with her, here in the belly of a quiet cavern, you see no way out of dodging her inquiries.

Accepting bitter defeat, you sigh and think it over. "No one, I guess."

"As I expected," she purrs. "No one in the world could say I'm just an animal. At least not anymore. The way I see it, if I can walk and talk like you, I'm just as human as you are."

"That's a bit of a stretch." You shake your head, attempting to dismiss Meowscarada's fantasies. "Slow down. You said it was hypothetical, so..."

Well, you know it wasn't truly hypothetical. Just another excuse for Meowscarada to spill her mind.

"Nevermind," you breathe, cutting yourself off. "Why are we talking about this anyway?"

"Why do you think, silly?" Her face brimming with glee, the feline once again pulls your head down into her fluffy chest. You cough and squirm as a few small tufts of fur fly into your mouth. "We should do it, Master! If it's true there's never been an interspecies marriage, we can be the first!"

You cough hard again, trying to pry yourself from her body. She just holds you down in an even tighter grasp, managing to simultaneously cut off your breathing and make your spine feel like it's crackling beneath her arms. If you didn't know any better, you'd think she was trying to kill you — or at least rough you up enough to knock you down into submission. Maybe you've been lying to yourself all these years leading up to this point in life.
