Despite their efforts, the trainer and his beloved Pokémon never escaped that place.

Time and time again, with tears in his eyes, Florian would check his phone for any scrap of service. Maybe not a lot, but just enough to send a text or place a call. Tell someone of his whereabouts in hopes he might be rescued or, worse case scenario, settle with the situation and tell his parents goodbye. He got nothing. There was never any service, never any hope of reaching the outside world, and before long his phone was diminished of battery power. The thing died and he spiked it to the ground, then regretted it instantly and began to sob.

His cries would never again reach someone else's ears. No one but Invidia, who was always preoccupied with trying new ways at breaking down the barrier. She had even resorted to attacking the surrounding walls, ones not made of crystal at first glance, but after having chipped away at one for long enough, another wall of pearly jewels was revealed tucking itself behind the rocks. She grew infuriated, even more so horrified that she and her trainer might end up dead, but not even her violent outbursts were enough to lay so much as a fracture on the crystal barriers. Each time she struck it, the crystals glimmered in her face, as though mocking her struggles.

Hours went by.

Time and time again, with bloodshot eyes swelling with tears, Florian would pick at the pieces of his shattered phone. He couldn't describe it, but he felt this undeniable insanity start to lay its roots within him. He would zone out sometimes and daydream he'd sent a text to his mom, a call to his dad, and they would both answer without fail. He'd dreamt that he never came down here with Invy, and instead strolled over to the neat little sandwich shop in town, the one that desperately needed renovating or an entire change of location if it came to that. The food was always good. Florian could almost taste it. Bread packed full of chorizo, a little lettuce, some mayonnaise. Cut in half, of course. There was no better feeling than sharing a tasty sandwich with his beloved Meowscarada.

He was zoning out again. So much so, he didn't feel Invy's arms wrapped around him. The boy lifted his head, caught sight of that luscious green fur just out of the corner of his eye. Invy had her whole body wrapped around him from behind as the two sat there on the cavern ground, forever dwelling in silence and longing for life that had been denied freedom.

Hopeless and unable to bring himself to speak again, Florian sunk into Invy's arms and fell asleep. The cat gently stroked her trainer's soft brown locks, holding him tight as if it would be the last thing she'd ever do.

...

As the days grew longer and their supply of food and water dwindled down to none, the duo spent most of their time now holding onto each other. Embracing one another in utter silence, for it was all they could do. They could dream, but where did dreams land them in the first place? Florian had once dreamed of unearthing something special down here, like an undocumented species of Pokémon or an experiment left abandoned by the late Professor Turo. Invy dreamed, too. She once dreamed of resurfacing from Area Zero with enough credit to her name to become a Pokémon renowned across Paldea.

And not just Paldea, but every other region as well. She wanted to find something so grand, so spectacular, that the world would never forget her. Beside her would always be her lovely little trainer, the boy with the contagious smile, the unending youth, a soul so pure and warm it could almost melt Invy's chilly demeanor. The two of them would become famous and loved by all, but Invy knew no one could love Florian more than she did.

Now, that would never happen. There was much left to be desired. Although fame and worldwide prestige was quickly becoming an afterthought. Survival. That's all Invidia wanted: to survive. To live. Florian was too young. He had so much life ahead of him that, now, he would never have the chance to live.
