As pristine and pure as the most delicate diamonds.

That's what They call me. An embodiment of perfection, a treasure lost in a sea of trash, a wonderful gemstone untouched by all impurities.

The moment I opened my eyes, I felt the weight of living become a luxury, rather than a burden.

I felt alive again.

And yet, so empty.

It's really the strangest feeling. When They sacrifice Their precious time and effort educating me on the essentials of living, I can't help but feel lost in my own head. Many times, my eyes wander, my mind falls silent, my ears filter out every instance of noise around me. I sink into a pit.

Down there, I wonder.

I wonder whose eyes I have stolen to see.

They have told me I don't need to eat, that it's strange for me to even consider food a necessity. In truth, I don't know why I do it either. It's a habit. Despite this, They have tried desperately time and time again to sway my way of thinking. Food is not important. Food is not my necessity.

As I stare down at a pile of dusty rocks on the cavern floor, and my tongue hungrily drags along my lips, I try to remind myself of the rule. At the same time, if I have a stomach, if I have a tongue and functional tastebuds, why am I not allowed to use them?

And I wonder.

I wonder whose mouth I have stolen to taste.

. . .

At some point in the day, I find myself staring at the cavern walls. I have never seen what's beyond them. Natural uncleanliness runs up and down every crevice, turning rocks to pitch-black grime, and grime to the suffocating stench of stale earth. And my nose is beyond sensitive. I've been told this is because I'm a cat — what a silly word that is. If these "cats" really are as They describe them, should I not be free to run beyond these walls?

I lift a paw and run it tenderly along the jagged body of the wall. The rocks that jut out at every angle sometimes tickle, and I have to pull my arm away to rub the sensitive pawpads underneath.

If only I had the strength to break down this barrier. The strength to confront Them after these months of being confined to a single cavern chamber. Whether we're underground or just on the surface of the world, I'll never know. I'll never know because They never let me see what's outside of this cage.

"You're overthinking again."

Their voice. Speak of the devil.

I turn around and face them, sitting complacently on my haunches as their crystalline eyes find me from afar. They forever sit upon that glimmering throne, a king without a kingdom.
