Knowing Area Zero's nature, it was probably best to stay combative in the event one of those uncharted Pokémon swooped in for a fight. Despite any probabilities, Florian insisted he and Invy refrain from stoking confrontation with the wilderness. Instead he'd whipped out his phone and took photos from afar, snapping pictures of Pokémon nesting and dueling one another. He nearly attracted the ruthless gaze of a mechanical Tyranitar, luckily ducking away just before the thing could rush in.

Invy watched her trainer have his fun. Which was often. Florian lived on the edge, if the edge could be as close to certain doom as possible. The boy frolicked off the thrill of danger. That meant getting too close for comfort with Pokémon five times his size, running by hoards of killer monsters and escaping by the barely visible hairs of his legs — only now, the dangers were something beyond the rest. He knew Area Zero was no playground. But he acted like it was a place he'd already been. Invy grumbled all the while he danced around the hills, coaxing small Pokémon out of their nests and taking pictures of ones that would have him dead.

He was happy, but not quite safe.

Invy just wanted him to be safe.

...

The two of them reached the depths of the fields, where the overgrown crystal clusters jutted out from a pit in the ground. The grass wilted away into rock, the remainder of the path spiraling into caverns lit up by those same tall jewels. As if they were alive and blinking, the sculptures glittered like nightlights against the unmoving void.

Florian looked in. "This is the best day of my life."

"Really?" Invy thought, cocking a shocked brow. "Best day of his life? Does he realize we could die and no one would know?"

Florian snapped one more picture of the fields behind him, then another of the cavern entrance. The descent was no worse than the first, except now it was official where they were headed. His curiosity and youth piqued, Florian gazed past his phone toward another structure erected at the bottom of this second descent. From afar, it looked like a massive metal cube. To most people, if they ever came down here, this sight would still be out of the ordinary, and a little exciting — to Florian, it was cloud nine.

"That's it," he said with a giddy look in his eyes. "The lab! We found it! Come on!" With no hesitation he pulled his partner along by the paw and went rushing down the hill. Invy gasped, barely keeping up with his stride as she was strung along like a ragdoll with just enough motor function to stay afoot. The light from the misty fields faded into darkness, and then another gentle light spilled unto their surroundings, bouncing off the walls in pretty twinkling patterns like the ebb and flow of velvety water. Looking over, Invy locked eyes with more of those beautiful crystals, the source of light. The cave was bright but they were brighter.

They reached the bottom of the cavern. Standing now against the massive metal building, the jaws of the buried laboratory clamped shut before them, the Pokémon and her trainer steeled themselves. Beyond that door, something wonderful awaited.

Florian looked over at his partner. "Whaddya think we'll find? Artifacts from the future? A crazy-strong robot sealed in a capsule? The time travel machine itself?"

"A few expired lottery tickets and empty styrofoam cups. Dead body, if we're lucky," Invy thought, shaking her head bitterly. Florian grinned. That look of hesitance in the cat's eyes meant only one thing: she was desperately trying to hide her own excitement. Real deep down, she must have been holding back excited vibrations. Her heart must've been quaking with anticipation!

Florian approached the door and glanced at a short mechanism risen from the rocks. Sitting atop a small black pedestal, a single red button. He tried it. A moment of silence passed, then disappointment ran through his features as he realized it might no longer be capable of operating the doors, and then he gestured to the metal gates with a heavy sigh.
