Adelaide's POV

Gavin broke the silence, saying:

--- So we gotta investigate, is that right? Make sure Edmund came back in Cole McCarthy.

I nodded.

--- So, how do you pretend to do that?

--- What?

--- Do you have anything in mind? Or I have to made this all up?

--- Well, I actually do have something in mind.

--- Then what is it, Adelaide? Now that I'm gonna help you...You know, I've been considering..I found this deal of ours quite...one-sided..I don't know if you get me but...Yeah, being alive is great and all but..what about I actually earn something in exchange?

--- How dare you?? I spared you! I've been waiting for years for and opportunity..

I said this last part to myself, I didn't know if he heard but, it wouldn't had made any difference, he just kept taking:

--- Well I was just thinking, nothing more and...Could you really kill me? Like, how?  You are already a ghost and as far as I know you can't exactly interact with the stuff around you, am I wrong? Just with your stuff as I saw till today.

--- Absolutely, I could end your life right now If I wanted to.

--- Then do it.

--- What?

--- Do it right now. Go ahead, finish my miserable life.

--- That's not how it works, Kevin.

--- See! I knew you could'nt.

I sighted deeply. I wouldn't explain it all to him but...I can't kill people. That's why I need him, in first place. He just noticed if now. I wished he lasted a bit longer to realize...

-- Alright, I cannot kill you by just a snap of my finger right now, satisfied?

--- Not yet, to be honest.

-- Huh?

--- Knowing this could make our deal more...consistent...

I cut his sentence:

--- What do you want in exchange?

He looks down for a second. And then he spoke, ankwardly, avoiding eye contact.

--- I guess you wouldn't be able to put me in a moment that is already gone, right?

--- You mean time travelling?

--- Sort of.

He looked away to the landscape.

--- I am not a super hero, Kevin, I'm just dead.

--- Alright so...Could you convince my mother  go back home somehow?

--- What? Is she dead?

He answered chuckling sadly:

---No, no...

Then he took a deep breath and kept going:

--- She left with a guy...some time ago. We just fight, don't really talk anymore and, huh, that's all my fault who never really liked that guy in first place and...made it too explicit... She's gone, but not from this plane yet. Just from mine.

I just nodded my head as he spoke, when he finished, I said:

--- So all you ask me is to make your mom come back?

--- Yup.

--- I don't..I think.. Would you kill someone just to...go along with this?

He did not answered, he just looked away. Yet, but both of us felt the answer in the air, right between us, passing by. It looked like it was the first time Kevin met her, the answer. That he would do anything just to fix his mistakes. He would do even more mistakes.

 But he wouldn't go back.

Not at all.

Morally ambiguous, if I may say. Or not. He's desparate, trying to fix everything.
I couldn't blame his for that.
Aren't I desperate to, somehow?

His look were empty, he wasn't physically with me anymore, he was just...somewhere else. Feeling the heavyness of the answer he was looking for,  the same answer that, one day casually appeared to him, without any warning, gut wrenching.

What would he do for love?

What would he do by despair, guilty, regret and love?

Actually, what we all would be able to do, moved by those? I think he knows it.
I think I know it too.
And here we are.
So different, so equal.

He came back to reality, his eyes still empty, his expression blank. Like a gasp, mixed with fear, but also  with sure, like a question and exclamation mark when put together in a sentence.

He said, his voice cracking:

--- Now we have a deal, Adelaide. Let's finish this all soon.

--- Are you sure, Kevin?

--- I couldn't be more sure about this in my whole life.

I thought for some seconds and talked before my bran could notice what I was saying:

--- I won't kill you anymore if you don't. You don't need to do this.

He looked at me like if he already did his decision. And that was exactly the case.

I sighted, and said:

--- The least I can do then is to assure you I'll do my part of our deal. Thank you, Kevin.

--- I'm not doing this for you, Adelaide.

--- What?

--- I said you're welcome, Adelaide.

--- No you didn't.

--- Yes I did. And now I'm heading up to my room, you should do the same, it's late and cold down here. Oh, you don't feel it, right?

--- ....

--- Goodnight.

He said it and went to his room as he said he would. I went to mine too.

I went to bed with a really odd feeling that night. Like a premonition, a bad feeling.

I needed to wake up tomorroq and start to search with him. I would do my best with him.
