The moment Leah got home for the summer vacation, she locked herself in her room. It was a big room with the walls painted black. Slytherin banners covered the walls and a few wizard photos of her with her sisters, one with the Malfoys, and one with Damian and Savannah. She paced her room, kicking anything that was on the floor in her way. She was absolutely irate at Harry Potter for stopping her father once more. For a few glorious hours, she believed that her life would be as it should have been, with her mother and father, not her aunt and uncle.
All summer, Leah replayed her father's praise over and over in her head. It was the first time she had heard his voice since she was a baby, or at least that was what she imagined. Aunt Narcissa had told Leah the circumstance of her birth. Voldemort had wanted someone to share his power with, a son, but he got Leah instead and was not happy about it. So to hear him speak to her as if he was proud of her made her happy. Maybe she could make her parents proud after all.
Amber would often come and knock on Leah's door, asking her to come out. Once Leah even saw Amber's shadow as she dropped to her stomach and tried to peek through the crack under the door. But Leah wanted to be left alone. Amber tried relentlessly to get Leah to come out and even Daphne and Aunt Narcissa would knock on her door, but still Leah didn't answer.
Soon enough though, the Hogwarts letters came and Leah was forced to come out of her room. The trip to Diagon Alley was scheduled for that day. The whole way there, Draco went on and on about getting a racing broom. Leah thought for moment. There would be a spot on the team for a new Chaser. Maybe she would try out too.
Diagon Alley was packed. Apparently a lot of people were doing their shopping today too. Uncle Lucius sighed and turned to his wife. "Shall we split up?" Aunt Narcissa nodded. Then Uncle Lucius turned to Draco and Leah. "If you two want to come with me on my errands then I will buy you your racing brooms." Their faces lit up.
"Hand me your list of school things and I will get them," said Aunt Narcissa, holding out her hand. Leah and Draco gave her their school lists and turned to hurry after Uncle Lucius, who was already walking down the cobblestone path.
"But Aunty," Leah heard Amber whine. "I want a racing broom too." Leah looked back and saw Amber hanging off Aunt Narcissa's arm.
"And do you plan on playing Quidditch?" Aunt Narcissa asked her.
"No," Amber pouted and raised no more objections. Leah smirked and turned around to find her self alone. She looked around and saw the sleek heads of her Uncle and cousin sliding into Knockturn Alley and out of sight. She quickly followed.
Leah had always wanted to visit Knockturn Alley since the first time she stepped foot in Diagon Alley, but her Aunt and Uncle advised against it. "It is not wise to be caught up in the Dark Arts at this time," they said. And now Leah could see why. The alley was dark and full of shops with dangerous and Dark objects filling the windows. She briefly wondered if her parents had ever been here.
She caught up with Draco at the entrance of Borgin and Burkes. "Touch nothing," Uncle Lucius warned them harshly as he walked up to the counter. Draco wandered the isles with a gleeful look on his face. He became enchanted by the Hand of Glory. Leah on the other hand, liked the opal necklace. She called Draco over.
"Look," she whispered, not entirely sure why she was whispering. "It's claimed the lives of 19 muggles!" She grinned at him. The ghostly green light coming off the necklace have Leah's pale face a ghastly glow.
"The Hand of Glory is cooler," Draco said defiantly as he sauntered back over to it. Leah rolled her eyes and continued to browse the shop. She stopped in front of a large black cabinet with the door slightly cracked open. She reached out her hand to trace the pattern on the door, then remembering the warning on the necklace, withdrew her hand.
"What is this?" she asked, not caring she was interrupting.
"That is a Vanishing Cabinet, young miss," Mr. Burke wheezed. "Don't bother with it. It's broken."
Leah turned her attention back to it. If it was broken, then it was safe to touch. She reached out her long, elegant fingers and trace the grooves on the door. At her touch, the door swayed slightly. She had forgotten it was already open. Wondering what the inside looked like, she curled her fingers around the door, about to pull it toward her.
"Done," Uncle Lucius said. "Come Leah, Draco."
Leah scowled and released the door. She thought she heard a small intake of breath, but Uncle Lucius and Draco were already leaving so Leah hurried to follow.
"Now to buy racing brooms, right father?" Draco asked
"Yes, yes." Uncle Lucius sighed. "And then we need to find your mother."
Draco grabbed Leah's hand and dragged her into Quality Quidditch Supplies. Leah couldn't help but feel a little excited herself. The shelves were stocked with different sleek brooms and colorful Quidditch robes for every team imaginable.
"Which one do you like?" Draco asked her. Leah pulled him towards a display in the center of the room, where there was a crowd of people. She pushed herself and Draco to the front.
"It's the newest model. I saw it in a magazine." she said to him. In front of them was a shiny black broom with the words "Nimbus 2001" etched on it. "What do you think?" Draco was speechless.
"Well, have you two decided?" Uncle Lucius's drawling voice came from behind them.
"This one," Leah pointed.
Uncle Lucius flagged down a salesman. "I'll take seven of this model. And have these two fitted for Slytherin Quidditch robes," he ordered, jingling his pocket full of money.
"But father, what if we don't make the team?" Draco said. Leah elbowed him.
Uncle Lucius smiled slyly. "You let me worry about that."
Half an hour later, Leah and Draco left with their arms full of their new robes and brooms. They walked slowly down the alley, keeping an eye out for the others. Then Leah heard her name being called.
"Leah! Leah! LEAH!" She looked over and saw Daphne standing with Amber and Aunt Narcissa outside Flourish and Blotts. There was quite a crowd.
"Got everything?" she asked. She gave her husband a meaningful look and he nodded. "Well I just have to get the school books, then we can head home."
"What's going on in there?" Daphne asked, leaning up on her tip toes to try and see over everyone's heads.
"Some big shot author is here," Leah said. She sounded bored as she jabbed her thumb in the direction of the poster advertising Gilderoy Lockheart.
They made their way inside. Draco and Amber went up the to the second level to get out of the way and Leah and Daphne followed. Her sisters and Draco leaned over the railing to watch what was happening downstairs, but Leah wasn't interested. She browsed the shelves, trailing her fingers along the spines of the books, though none of them appealed to her.
"Bet you loved that, didn't you Potter?" Draco's voice reached her ears. She turned around and they were all downstairs talking to none other than Harry Potter himself. She watched the Weasley girl come to his defense and she smirked. She turned her back again. Her cousin could handle himself.
Moment later, her attention was turned again to Harry Potter. She saw her Uncle Lucius fall in a cascade of books. She ran over to him and pulled him from the pile. He struggled to straighten his robes.
"Here girl," he growled. "Take your book if it's the best your father can get you." He shoved a book in the Weasley girl's arms but Leah caught a glance of a small black book shoved inside the bigger one. Her stomach lurched. She stared at the book like it was a familiar friend she had long forgotten. She felt like she knew it from somewhere.
"Lucius," Aunt Narcissa hissed. "We've got all our things. Girls, let's go. Now!" She glared at her husband. She put one hand on Daphne's shoulder and the other on Amber's, and forcefully lead them from the shop. Leah followed closely behind. She glanced over her shoulder at the group of Weasleys, but she didn't catch a glimpse of the book again. Draco tugged on her sleeve and she hurried forward.
Leah thought of nothing but the little black book until her ride back to Hogwarts.
