Leah grew up to be just like her parents; proud and haughty. But she had a deep love for family. She was very close to her sisters and viewed the Malfoys as her parents and Draco as her brother. When the time came for her to travel to Hogwarts, she was sad to leave them all behind. Her sisters watched her, filled with silent jealousy, as she was the first of them to board the Hogwarts Express. The entire ride, Leah sat in a compartment by herself. She didn't mind being alone. Meanwhile, people would press their faces against the door of her compartment, trying to get a glimpse of Bellatrix's daughter. Leah turned her face towards the window. In her pocket, her hand closed around her ebony wand and a warm feeling spread through her fingertips. Perhaps sensing her discomfort, the children left and did not bother her again.

When at last the train finally came to a stop, Leah stepped onto the platform, glowing in her brand new robes. She stood up on her tip toes, trying to see over the heads of the older students for her first glimpse of Hogwarts.

"Firs' years, over 'ere!" The loud call made Leah jump. She looked for the cause of the voice and took a startled step back. The biggest man she had ever seen was looming over her, carrying a bright lamp. Leah had heard stories about Giants, but she never thought she would meet one. Though as the giant got closer to her, she could tell he was not a real one, just an unusually large man. "Firs' years!" He called again. "Follow me!"

Leah went with the crowd of first years as they headed around a bend. There were many gasps and squeals of delight as they rounded the corner and saw the castle looming over a great black lake. One girl behind Leah was staring at it so hard that she walked right into Leah. She turned around and glared furiously at the girl who blushed and hurried away, leaving Leah quite alone again.

"No more 'an four t' a boat!" cried the man. There was much scrambling as friends tried to get a boat together. Leah saw two identical red head boys rush to boat, causing one of the twins to fall in the water and both to laugh. At last, everyone was settled. Leah ended up in a boat with two other girls and one boy. The boy stuck his nose in the air and ignored her completely. One of the girls kept glancing at Leah and then looking away, frightened. The other girl was the same girl who walked into Leah earlier and was obviously avoiding eye contact. At the command of the man, the boats lurched forward.

The excitement in the air continued to grow as they got closer to the castle. Even Leah couldn't stop herself from smiling. Once the boats reached the opposite shore, the giant man lead them into the castle and up a flight of stairs where a stern looking witch who was waiting for them in front of a large set of black doors. Leah hung at the back of the crowd as the witch explained the houses of Hogwarts. She let her mind wander. She knew all about the four houses.

At last, the doors opened and the witch swept them through into the Great Hall. Leah let out a involuntary gasp as she stepped into the magnificent hall with its shining plates, floating candles, and bewitched ceiling. All heads turned towards them as they made their way to the patched hat in front of the staff table. While everyone else craned their necks to watch the hat, Leah let her eyes wander the hall, drinking in the sights.

The sudden sound of clapping brought Leah back to the present. She clapped along, pretending like she had been listening to the hat. The witch pulled out a roll of parchment and began to call out names. The line of first years slowly got thinner as Leah watched them all get sorted. There was a small commotion when the witch called one of the red head twins forward and they both ran up, to everyone's amusement but Leah's. Luckily, they were both sorted into Gryffindor, the house she hoped to avoid. Finally, Leah heard, "Lestrange, Leah!" and the hall went silent. She could feel every eye upon her. Determined not to make a fool of herself, Leah stuck out her chin and marched proudly up to the stool. The line of first years seem to melt away from her as she passed. Trying not to let her nerves or her anger show, she jammed the sorting hat on her head.

"Ahhhhhh yesss.." said a small voice in her ear. "Noble blood, strong and proud, determined, extremely smart. Ravenclaw would do you well, but no.. You are too much like your parents to be put into Ravenclaw. Ahh yessss, I know all about your parents. It's all here, in your head. You crave their approval like a drug, but that is of little importance. Cunning and witty, fearless, I know exactly where to put you.. SLYTHERIN!" The hat shouted the last word to the entire hall and the Slytherin table exploded in cheers. Leah gave a shaky smile and practically ripped the hat from her head. The hat had seen far deeper into her mind than she would have liked. She saw much friendlier faces at the Slytherin table, who were still cheering her on. A few still looked frightened by her, but there were still people smiling at her, or staring in awe. Some people even patted her on the back as she sat down. Across the hall, she saw many people put their heads together and look in her direction. Her excitement deflated.

When the sorting was complete, the dishes filled with food and Leah ate until she felt she would explode, enjoying a few small polite conversations. As soon as Leah realized she could not take another bite, the food disappeared and Dumbledore stood up.

"Welcome, welcome my pupils! Another year full of bangs and funny smells awaits us! But for now, to bed! And ready your minds for what is to come tomorrow!" At his word, the prefects jumped up and started to herd members of their house to the correct dormitory. Leah fell into step behind the boy she had shared the boat with. This time he gave her a tentative smile, which she returned with a smirk and his smile grew wider. They were lead into the dungeons and given the password, blood-status. Leah barely looked around at the ghostly green common room with its black leather furniture before she headed for the girl's dormitories. They other girls chatted away as they all pulled on their night gowns, but Leah did not join in the conversations and the other girls were content to ignore her. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she was asleep with a small smile on her face.
