"Don't dwell on it, Leah," said Daniel's comforting voice in her ear. "Come, the Dark Lord is calling for you."
Tearing her eyes from the horrible sight of the dead body, Leah followed Daniel back into the fray. Her mind was numb. She stayed close to Daniel's side, hardly realizing what she was doing. She saw faces fall before her under the might of her spells, but none of it made a difference to her anymore. More than once, she found herself being knocked to the floor, where she was more than willing to just stay and be trampled, until Daniel would lift her back to her feet again.
"What are you doing Leah?" Daniel shouted at her as he lifted her off the floor for the fifth time.
Her eyes had a blank, empty look as she looked at him. "I can't do this anymore, Daniel."
Daniel thought he had never seen her look more helpless and pitiful. Wincing as the blisters on his face stretched, he growled and gripped her shoulder, shaking her roughly. "Remember why you fight Leah!"
He saw the spark re-enter her eyes as she thought of Barty and her son and Arya, the reasons she wanted to return home. She gave him a small nod and pushed herself back into the battle. The whole time she was fighting, she kept her eyes out for Daphne, Amber, Barty, Savannah, anyone.
Leah rushed forward, sending out Stunning Spells, trying not to kill anyone else. As much as she hated to admit it, a feeling of power rose up in her as countless people fell beneath her wand. She tried to repress the feeling of excitement, but as another person was blasted away from her, she couldn't help but smile. What are you doing, Leah? You aren't supposed to be enjoying this!
A wall of Death Eaters was now surrounding her, all with their backs to her, almost like they were protecting her. Daniel was nowhere to be seen. Leah craned her neck, trying to see past the wall of flesh, but suddenly they all dropped, like puppets whose strings had been cut.
"Riddle," Molly Weasley hissed, facing Leah. Both woman raised their wands and a battle ensued. Molly was a great fighter, but Leah had the upper hand. Though she had no desire to kill another Weasley, Leah was starting to think she had no choice.
Just as Leah was about to open her mouth and utter the fateful curse, Daniel jumped in front of her and pushed her to the side and took up the duel with Molly. Leah fled, running up the nearest flight of stairs.
"I'm Draco Malfoy, I'm Draco, I'm on your side!" Leah turned to see Draco, wandless and on the floor as another Death Eater leered over him. Leah shot a spell and blasted the Death Eater back, sending him flying over the banister without remorse.
"Leah," Draco sighed in relief. He started to walk towards her, but he suddenly toppled toward, passed out cold. Leah ran forward and caught him before he crashed to the ground, tucking him safely out of harm's way.
Catching her breath, Leah surveyed the ground below her. The fight was still raging with full force, spells flying, children screaming, it was enough to drive Leah mad. Still she saw no more familiar faces.
Suddenly, a cold, familiar voice echoes through the hall, coming from the walls themselves. "You have fought valiantly. Lord Voldemort knows how to value true bravery. Yet you have sustained heavy losses. If you continue to resist me, you will all die, one by one. I do not wish this to happen. Every drop of magical blood spilled is a loss and a waste. Lord Voldemort is merciful. I command my forces to retreat immediately. You have one hour. Dispose of your dead with dignity. Treat your injured."
Instantly, Leah started to back away, walking slowly towards the exit like she was under some spell. Her father's next words caused her to stop. "I speak now, Harry Potter, directly to you. You have permitted your friends to die for you rather than face me yourself. I shall wait for one hour in the Forbidden Forest. If, at the end of the hour, you have not come to me, have not given yourself up, then the battle recommences. This time, I shall enter the fray myself, Harry Potter, and I shall find you, and I shall punish every last man, woman, and child who has tried to conceal you from me. One hour."
