"Broadcast me," Katniss demanded, "If Snow's watching this, maybe he'll let the signal in, if he sees me. Put me on the air so he can see me,"
"Yes. Yes," Plutarch agreed knowing it was the best idea they had. "Put her on," Coin said to Beetee, "Can we do this? Can we still get in?" Haymitch asked as he heightened the camera to aim at her.
"Yes. For the moment. The line's open. He will only see you," Beetee told her, "Okay, Katniss, go,"
"President Snow? President Snow. It's Katniss," she spoke to the camera, "There's no guarantee he's even watching," Coin said to Plutarch, "President Snow," "I know, but he might be,"
"President Snow, I need to speak with you. Are you there? President Snow, it's Katniss. Can you hear me? I need to speak with you," she continued speaking as the static continued on the screen.
"President Snow, it's Katniss. President Snow, are you there?"
They were losing hope, Haymitch's head dropped as he looked to the floor. Naomi watched in anticipation along with Plutarch and Coin.
"Can you hear me?" She asked as she looked towards them and turned back to the screen again, "President Snow—"
"—Miss Everdeen. What an honour,"
His mischievous grin appeared on the screen, "I don't imagine you're calling to thank me for the roses," he said with a huge smile. "I never asked for this. I never asked to be in the Games. I never asked to be The Mockingjay. I just wanted to save my sister, and keep Peeta alive. Please, just let him go. And I will stop being The Mockingjay. I will disappear. You will never have to see me ever again," she continued speaking while Beetee tried getting through to Boggs.
"Miss Everdeen. You couldn't run from this... any more than you could have run from the Games,"
"Please. You've won. You've already beaten me. Release Peeta. And take me instead,"
Snow shook his head. "We're long past the opportunity for noble sacrifice,"
"Then tell me what to do. I've always kept my promises, haven't I?" "You said you didn't want a war. And that's just what's happened. I told you what a fragile thing peace was. And still, like a child, you took pleasure in breaking it. I know what you are. I know you can't see past your narrowest concerns. But please, Miss Everdeen. I doubt you know what honesty is anymore,"
"You asked me to convince you that I was in love with Peeta. Haven't I at least done that?"
"Miss Everdeen, it's the things we love most that destroy us," he told her with a smirk, "I want you to remember that I said that. Don't you think I know your friends are in the Tribute Centre?" He told her making their hearts sink, "Cut them off,"
The static eventually appeared just as Snow walked off, leaving them there to worry.
"Boggs, come in,"
"What happened?" Katniss asked concerned, "Boggs, come in. Do you read me?" Beetee spoke again trying to get a response but hearing nothing back.
"He knows that they're in there. It's a trap,"
"Katniss, hold it," "We have to get a hold of them. We have to tell them to get out. He knows," Katniss told them worriedly, Plutarch stood with a hand over his mouth in shock, removing it to speak to her, "There's no signal. We can't contact them,"
"No. Haymitch, he knew the whole time. He was taunting me. No, Haymitch. They're in there,"
"No, we don't know that," "Did I lose them both tonight? Did I lose them both tonight?! Did I lose them both tonight?!" She cried as he hugged her, Naomi couldn't move. She stood still, looking at the static on the screen in disbelief as she cried.
"Did I lose them? I lost them both. No! No!" She sobbed as Haymitch shushed her to try keep her calm, feeling a hand on her shoulder but she didn't turn to look.
She went to her room, sitting in her bed all alone while thinking to herself. There was still no sign of them and still no news. They were probably dead. She fidgeted with her necklace, moving it between her fingertips. Wishing for some sign, wishing for them to be brought back safe.
Finnick knocked on her door, looking as emotionless as her. He walked inside and sat alongside her, "You never know, they might be completely fine," he spoke up after a few minutes of silence.
"You know what Snow's like. You really think he'd let them live?"
Finnick sighed, "I don't know, Naomi. I really don't know," he admitted to her before going quiet again.
"Why didn't you tell me?" She asked him, he lifted his head again to look at her, "About what..," he asked her acting stupid like he didn't know exactly what she was on about, she glared towards him.
"You know exactly what, Finnick. He used you. You were only a boy, you didn't deserve that," she told him while looking at him, he couldn't barely keep eye contact with her. "I didn't want to talk about it to you. You didn't need to know you were just a kid at the time," "Yeah and so were you. He gave your body up to people like you were a piece of meat, does that not piss you off?"
He sighed, "Of course, it pisses me off. It pisses me off much more than anything ever has. But I did it for you. To keep you safe, to keep you alive and well. I'd do anything if it meant you were okay, that's all that matters to me. Which is why when you became a Victor I made him promise me he would never do it to you. I kept on doing it to make sure you never had to," "Finnick," she said shaking her head as tears filled her eyes, "Why, why on earth would you do that?!"
"I'd make sure you were as happy as you could be, didn't matter about me at that point. I was already so far gone, and I didn't want the same for you. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if it meant you were alright. It's my duty to you as an older brother, to save you from the trauma and things I would never wish to speak about, to make sure you are as safe as you can be. That's my job,"
She didn't have any words, she couldn't believe everything he'd done for her without her even being slightly aware of it. Instead she wrapped her arms tightly around him, "I'm so sorry, Finnick,"
He gave her a squeeze back, "Just know how much I love you, Naomi," "I love you too," she told him as she buried her head into his neck, letting her tears roll down her face.
"We will be okay. We might just get out of this alive, Naomi. Then we can finally live our lives,"
"Yeah, how great would that be," she said to him, smiling slightly, he gave her hand a small squeeze as he tried to keep her thinking positively. That was all he could do.
