Harper POV:
It's been two weeks since I was kicked out of my parents house. I know I should be sad about it, they're my family you know? But all I felt was joy. Those two weeks out of my parents house were spent living with Riley. I absolutely loved it.
I got to fall asleep every night with her in my arms and wake up every morning to her beautiful smile. I know it's a very new relationship, but I'm falling for her more and more everyday.
Today is a big day. It's our senior night for soccer. Time is really flying by. It feels like just yesterday that I walked into tryouts. I remember I was so nervous about trying out for the team but all those nerves went away when I saw Riley walking over to me.
There was however a small pit of sadness in my stomach. Tonight during announcements, I'd be walking out alone. After what went down with my parents, I knew they weren't coming. As we stood in the locker room, I looked around at all my fellow seniors wearing their black senior shirts. They all had smiles on their faces and slight traces of tears in their eyes.
I took a shaky breath. I guess today is going to be harder than I thought. Not only are my parents not walking out with me, but I still had no college offers. If I don't manage to get a scholarship soon, there's no way I can afford college, especially now that my parents kicked me out.
I snapped out of it when I felt Riley give my shoulder a gentle squeeze. "It's going to be okay." she whispered to me. Somehow she always knew what was going on.
"I have to go, captains are up first. I'll see you out there." she said. "See you out there." I replied. She smiled and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before walking out of the locker room to meet her dad.
Unfortunately I was last to be announced so I had to sit in the locker room alone while I waited. I found it weird that I was last to be announced. Usually they did the captains first and then the rest of the seniors by alphabetical order. Considering Lexi's last name is Maddox, it's odd that I'm being announced after her. When it was finally my turn to go, I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. When I opened the door of the locker room and stepped outside, I was shocked to see my whole team standing there. Riley walked up to me with a huge smile framing her face. She handed me the flowers that my family would've given me.
"What's going on? Why are you all here?" I asked confused.
Coach Lawson walked up to me and gave me a quick hug before gesturing to my team. "You're family Harper. We're all here for you." he said.
I looked around at my teammates. They all shared matching smiles and watery eyes. "Thank you coach."
"Don't thank me. It was all Riley's idea."
I looked over at her to see a sheepish grin on her face. "That's why you had to go last." she said softly. "We needed the whole team here to walk out with you."
My heart swelled with joy and my eyes filled with happy tears. I pulled Riley into a tight hug before turning to my teammates. "Thank you all. This means the world to me."
With that we walked out onto the field as the announcer spoke about me. "Harper is a forward and has been playing soccer for 14 years..." etc. After the announcements finished, we all got our stuff on and went to warm up. The speaker cracked to life as "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore roared through the stadium.
I looked around in awe. Every seat in the stadium was full. People all stood wearing their Scranton High apparel, faces painted in green and black, all screaming along the lyrics to the song.
Something inside me clicked. The energy from the fans leeching through my veins. This is my game and I'm going to make sure everyone watching knows it.
The other team started with the ball and the second that they kicked it off I was off, sprinting towards their center midfielder. She had just barely received the ball when I was already 5 yards away from her. Her eyes widened in panic and she quickly passed the ball off to her center defender.
