Chapter Three

"Miss Hart, there's someone at reception for you?" Carey Jennings, the receptionist for the school tells me with a slight smile after I've finally opened the classroom door to see her. She'd been hovering outside for at least five minutes and having finally caught my eye, I realised she was actually trying to gain my attention. I must have looked as confused as I felt by the information because she giggles at the expression on my face. It's unusual for her to have left her spot at the reception, let alone to come to the classroom to tell me about a visitor and on top of all that, I wasn't expecting anyone. This was all very strange. "He says he's here for his nephew's show and tell?"

I can immediately see where this is going as I turn back around to face my classroom. "Kaiden?" I call out distractedly, noticing the slightly crazy picture inside my classroom. The kids are not hard at work as most people would ordinarily expect on a Wednesday afternoon, but I usually give them some time to play after lunch to help them settle before work begins. It means that while some are in one corner while others are at their tables, there's lots of noise and laughter. I knew it was fine but I was suddenly feeling a little self conscious about someone else seeing them all like this as I look for the boy in question. I motion for him to come over and smile when I see him in one of the skirts from the dress up corner, Carey also giggles when she sees the wide grin on his face. "Kaiden, Miss Jennings says there is someone in reception here for show and tell? Your uncle?"

"Yep!" He confirms happily, not a care in the world as he pulls the skirt off and looks around for his uncle. He's so innocent and happy that I have to take a deep breath to massage my forehead as I search for the patience that my mother gave me. After just a couple of seconds pass I bend over so that I'm on his eye level, trying to push back on the annoyance and focus more on my confusion to understand how and why this could have happened.

"Did you forgot that you need to warn me if someone is coming? I thought you just wanted to show some photos?" I ask him, forcing a smile on my face so that he knows I'm not mad. However, this just seems to throw him off a little as he gets confused as to why this is an issue.

"I was just going to be but then I spoke to my uncle and he wanted to come! He said he could bring the wheel if he came but I couldn't take it by myself!" He explains as though it's obvious and I can't help but frown as I pretend to nod and understand.

"Wheel?" I ask exasperatedly, finding that although I have one answer, things seem to only be getting more confusing. It doesn't help that there are yells coming from beside us as the kids get a little more hectic, rather than beginning to slowly settle down like they normally do.

"He works for Mercedes!" Kaiden finally reveals the relevant fact about his uncle. I sigh as I stand up and look at Carey with a grimace, noticing that she still seems to be practically vibrating with excitement about something, perhaps the guy was hot.

"Looks like I have a visitor..." I inform her through thin lips as I look between them and then back at the class who were not prepared for someone to walk into this room right now. "Kaiden, will you please go with Miss Jennings and get your uncle while I try and get everyone to tidy up quickly and get in their seats?" I suggest and the other two agree, quickly walking off down the hallway as they leave me to try and get the kids back into their seats. "Everyone! We have a special visitor for Kaiden's show and tell this afternoon coming right now! So please can you tidy up what you are doing and get back in your seats?!" I call out and breathe a small sigh of relief when there is some movement but it's limited when there are still a third of the seats left empty. "The last full table will not be allowed to be table of the week for the next two weeks!" I try again. This time there's a lot of movement as only one seat is left empty and I realise that it's just Kaiden's. I survey the room and smile, giving everyone a thumbs up as a sign of my thanks. "That's amazing! Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate you listening to me! I'm sorry to cut optional play time short but it turns out we have a guest which means the rest of the work will just be finished up tomorrow! Please just remember classroom rules! Don't shout out, don't talk while another person is speaking, put your hand up if you have a question and think about your words before you ask them! You can ask what you like but that means you have the responsibility to make sure that you're kind when you do," I remind them happily, seeing some movement out the corner of my eye but I stay focused on the scene in front of me until I've finished talking at which point I spin on my heel and smile at Carey and Kaiden before my eyes travel up to see his 'uncle' holding his hand in my doorway. "Holy fudge..."
