Skye

I stared lazily outside while I sat on my windowsill, blinking as I watched the stop lights below reflect off the roads so easily.

Why was it so beautiful? I loved the view from my room, honestly, it was gorgeous, and I couldn't stop staring.

But—all the sudden—I heard my bedroom door creak open, and I gasped and shot up, backing off.

"Hey," Sebastain said, stepping in and closing the door behind him, "it's just me."

I settled back into myself, setting my hand back on the windowsill.

He just remained in place, voice gentle. "Can't sleep?"

I shook my head, though I didn't know if he could see it in the darkness. "I'm nervous."

He just stepped over to my bed and sat on the mattress. "Homesick?"

I nodded again.

He patted next the bed next to him, and I listened to his indication and stepped over, settling on the bed beside him.

He set his hand over mine, and I felt my face flush as I glanced up at him. "Do you want to talk?" he said to me.

I parted my lips and stared down at the bed, keeping my hand under his. "I'm just worried about them," I expressed. "I left them, and they're probably screaming and calling the police and looking for me now. I feel... bad."

He sighed and turned toward me. "They love you, you know that?"

Something cold swelled inside me, and I bowed my head down, tears burning my eyes. "I know," I whispered, voice cracking.

"You love them, too," he replied softly. "And that's amazing, but... Skye... they are human, and you are not. They cannot protect you from the unnatural because they are not supposed to know what it is, and they do not know what it is, understand? If you stayed with them longer, you would be very unsafe."

I closed my eyes as tears slipped down my cheeks. "I know."

He sighed and tipped my chin up, and I glanced over at him as he brushed his thumbs under my eyes, drying my tears.

"Why don't I help you sleep?" he whispered, the golden specks in his eyes glistening. "Wouldn't that be nice?"

I watched him for a moment, just breathing.

And I finally nodded.

He just smiled and shuffled up the sheets, and he slipped under, patting the bed in front of him as I stared down.

I winced a little. "Wait... but I... I can't."

"I won't try anything," he promised. "I swear on my wings."

I glanced over at him.

He just patted the bed again.

I sighed and complied, crawling forward and slipping under the covers.

I knew he smiled when I pulled against him, and he wrapped his arms around me as I snuggled my face into his neck.

"Your skin's soft," I commented quietly.

"Thanks," he replied, amused.

The moment he started brushing his fingers along my back, I melted into him, exhaustion consuming me.

"Do you like your nightdress?" he asked me.

I nodded, starting to drift.

"Good," he replied. "I can buy you more tomorrow."

I struggled to keep my eyes open as he continued stroking my skin, and he just lightly pulled my arm, so I lay slightly on top of him, clearly trying to get me close, but I wasn't sure why.

He just kept soothing me, and set his cheek on my head. "Are you getting sleepy?"

I nodded slightly.

"Okay," he whispered, "go to sleep."

I just snuggled closer, muttering, "This means nothing."

I felt him smile, and he only continued rubbing. "Sure."

But my arguments faltered, and my lashes fluttered shut.

I was so... tired.

I needed to sleep.
