Sebastian

I stepped over to the open doorway of Neveah's bedroom, finding the two girls sitting on Neveah's bed and chatting.

"Yeah..." Neveah said, "he's cute. And he gave me this!"

She pulled along, gold necklace from her shirt, revealing a teardrop-shaped ruby carved in the middle.

"It's gorgeous!" Skye replied, closing her eyes kindly.

Neveah just rolled onto her belly as I remained in the doorway, watching Skye curiously. "So, how are you and Sebastian?"

Her eyes darkened then, and I felt something cold swell inside me at the numbness that suddenly showed itself.

"Oh, no..." Neveah replied, brows drawn together, "I know that look."

Skye just set her chin on the bed. "I asked him about his family..." she told Neveah as my stomach turned again, "and he dodged the question, and I asked him again, and he suddenly got this cold look and snapped at me."

Neveah's lips parted. "I'm sure he's not mad at you."

No, I wasn't. She was right!

I couldn't ever stay mad at Skye... It was a curse, I swear.

"I don't know..." Skye whispered, "I think he lost his family, and..." she said the next words quietly, "for some reason... I feel like it's my fault and I don't know why."

The cold in my chest deepened, and I found myself knocking on the door with hesitation.

Skye and Neveah whipped their heads toward me, and Skye's expression hardened slightly, and she looked back at Neveah as if she didn't see me.

"Oh, Neveah!" she said with too much enthusiasm. "We forgot to put up that poster you like!"

Neveah watched as Skye hopped off the bed and stepped over to her room, looking for said poster.

"Skye," I said then.

She just jumped happily and pulled out some famous boy band poster. "Oh, look! See! Right here!"

Neveah's brows arched as I leaned against the doorway.

"Skye," I said again.

"Where should we put it?" she said, wandering the room. "Hmmm... I wonder. Where? There's so much space on the walls!"

"Skye," I repeated a little sharper.

"Maybe on the left wall? No," she said, shaking her head, "there's a window there. Maybe the right? Nah, then no one can see it. Maybe on the wall across from the door? Maybe! That might actually work!" She looked to Neveah. "You have tacks, right? Are they in your desk?"

"Skye," I said again, getting mildly irritated.

"Or the cubby?" she continued, though Neveah just watched in amusement. "Or the bookshelf? Or are they still packed."
