The road stretched endlessly under the dim glow of the streetlights, the only sound being the soft hum of the engine. She was curled up in the passenger seat, her head resting against the window, lost in a peaceful slumber.

After a whole month, I finally saw that-peace. No tension lining her forehead, no defiance in her eyes, just quiet exhaustion.

I glanced at her briefly before focusing back on the road. A few minutes passed, and I noticed how she shifted slightly, curling into herself, her hands tucked close to her chest.

Is she cold?

I exhaled, pulling over onto the roadside. The moment the car stopped, I reached out, my fingers brushing against her forehead. A faint warmth clung to her skin. She still has a slight fever.

Without thinking twice, I shrugged off my overcoat and carefully draped it over her small frame. The fabric swallowed her, her face barely visible beneath it. For a second, I watched as she unconsciously nuzzled into the warmth, her breath evening out.

I sighed and switched off the AC, adjusting the vents so the cool air wouldn't reach her.

Settling back into my seat, I started the car again.

As the journey continued, my eyes would flicker toward her every now and then. A part of me still wrestled with the weight of our conversation from earlier, but for now, I chose to focus on this-her peaceful face, the quiet hum of the road, and the realization that, despite everything, I had never wanted, still I was doing.

The mansion was silent when we arrived-just the way it always was at this hour. I called out to her, "Hey! We reached home." But she didn't stir.

I stepped out, walked to her side, and opened the car door. She was still curled up, deep in sleep, unaware that we had arrived. For a moment, I stood there, watching her. She looked... different. Peaceful. The sharp edges of her stubbornness were nowhere to be seen.

Without overthinking, I bent down and scooped her into my arms. She shifted slightly, pressing herself closer to my warmth. I could feel her breath, soft and steady against my chest.

Kicking the car door shut, I walked inside. The house was dark, everyone already in their rooms. My footsteps barely made a sound as I carried her straight to ours.

Laying her down on the bed, I pulled the duvet over her, making sure she was warm. She let out a quiet sigh, turning slightly in her sleep.

I sat beside her, my gaze lingering longer than it should. The lamp's dim glow softened her features, making her seem almost fragile. Almost unfamiliar.

"Why does it feel like I've known her forever? As if she was always meant to be here... with me."

I exhaled, running a hand through my hair. This wasn't supposed to happen.
