12. Party

I sighed, rubbing my temple as I sat up on the couch. Since the moment we entered the bedroom, all I could hear was her constant sniffling.

She sat on the bed, cross-legged, surrounded by tissues like a tragic heroine from a Bollywood movie, wiping her tears and her now-red nose.

And me? I was watching her like a fool, utterly clueless.

After several long minutes of her dramatic sobbing, I finally asked, "Why are you crying?"

She looked up at me with those big brown teary eyes, sniffled, and wiped her nose again.

"I don’t know," she replied.

I blinked. She doesn’t know?

"You’re crying because Chachi said all that to you?" I asked, expecting another emotional outburst.

She shook her head.

"No."

I exhaled deeply. "Then why?"

She sniffled again, tossing a tissue aside. "I know how she is. She has a habit of vomiting nonsense. That’s not why I’m crying."

Now I was even more confused.

"Then what is it?"

She took a deep breath and muttered, "Because… you took a stand for me."

I stared at her.

She sniffled again.

I blinked.

And then, without a word, I grabbed the pillow and threw myself on the couch, hiding my face behind it.

This woman is impossible.

Minutes passed in silence except for her occasional sniffling.

Then, against my better judgment, I asked from behind the pillow, "Did I hurt you again with my words?"

She shook her head furiously, wiping the corner of her eyes.

"Then what in the world are you crying for?" I asked, my patience hanging by a thread.

She wiped her tears again. "I can't believe you said all that."

"Said what?" I frowned.

She pointed at me. "That you’re the problem in my life."
