It's finally Thursday. Michael and Ashton are going back to school since their three days of 'staying at home'. The punishment of staying home after getting in trouble was a sort of stupid one. It just taught everyone that if you do bad things in school you get to stay out of school. The one downside is that the faculty expects you to have changed and realized what you did was wrong. But Michael was proud of what he did.

Michael was having his breakfast quickly in the kitchen. He was shoving spoonfuls of cereal into his mouth above the sink so he could throw the bowl in before he runs off to Ashton's truck. He was slurping the milk from the bowl when his mom walked into the kitchen with a very tired expression.

"Ashton coming soon," she asked Michael while opening the fridge to see what there was to eat. Michael turned around after finishing the milk, his chest heaving from gulping so fast.

"Yeah. He should be here any second." He placed the bowl in the sink before quickly rinsing it out. He wiped his hands on his thighs and then fixed the beanie that sat on his head. He watched his mom, who was taking out eggs and bacon strips from the fridge.

He hasn't seen his mom a whole lot lately. She was very disappointed when she found out that Mikey was suspended for three days. She came into the school in a rush after work and sat in front of the principal with her mouth tightly shut. When she's furious, she doesn't say a thing.

Michael kept pulling out his phone and checking to see if Ashton had texted him yet. He was getting nervous by just standing in the same room with his mom. He wasn't sure if she was going to burst at any moment, complaining about what he did to Vick in front of everyone. But he'd also be pretty upset if she just said nothing about it. He at least wanted her to tell him off. He's been waiting the whole week for it, but she never did.

Ashton finally texted him. His name popped up on the screen as his text ringtone went off. He silenced his phone before leaning off of the cabinets. His mom was tossing eggs around in a pan on the stove. He cleared his throat.

"He's here. I'll see you," he muttered softly. He began to walk out of the kitchen and towards the front door, but his mom spoke up. Usually she never does.

"Mikey." He stopped walking. She hasn't called him that since he was a kid. That's when his mom was truly happy around him; that's when he was alright with his mom and was never mad at her. He turned around in his spot to see her staring at him from in front of the stove. "Don't get into anymore fights, okay? And if someone is bullying you, just go to an adult. They'll deal with it. I don't want you getting into anymore trouble or getting hurt." She was choking on her words and Michael could tell that she was going to cry. He had no idea what to do. He hasn't seen his mom cry in years. He can hear her through the walls sometimes, but it's always at night when he's supposed to be sleeping.

He stared at her as she wiped the bottom of her eyes with her hand. She took in a breath through her nose and managed to calm down a bit.

"Your father was a troublemaker. And I don't want you turning out like him. You may look like him, but you haven't shown one quality of his personality since you were born. You're better than him, Mikey. And I don't want bullies in school making you turn into him."

This was a first. She's never talked to him about his dad since he was, probably, six. He'd always ask about where his dad was, and she would make up a story that always ended with "We're better off without him" or "He's fine; he's doing his own things."

Michael started walking back into the kitchen. The eggs were sizzling on the pan behind his mom, so he pulled her away from the stove. He placed his hands on her shoulders and then looked down into her eyes that were just like his. He breathed quietly through his nose, but she was taking in deep breaths through her mouth. They both didn't know what had happened. The past week sort of changed everything. It caused a change in character.
