"Phones in the basket, please," the teacher said once Michael and some other kid walked into the room. Michael took his phone from his pocket and placed it in the bin on the teacher's desk with an upset expression on his face.
It was the next day, Tuesday, and Michael had in-school suspension. Luke didn't need to come because he was more of a victim in the fight than anything else. He did get in a bit of trouble because he spilled the beans about doing Vick's homework for the past few months, but it wasn't anything major like Michael and Vick. Vick's friends didn't get in any trouble, which was ridiculous to Michael because they almost kicked him in the nuts. That's a perfect reason to get suspended.
There were only three other people in the BAC--the place where the kids go for in-school suspension. Michael never knew what BAC actually stood for, but everyone in school just called it 'Bad-Ass Children'. Michael's mom didn't think he was that bad ass once she got a call from his dean that he was going to be going to the BAC for three days in a row. He had to come during his lunch period, which meant he couldn't be with Ashton, but he still had the privilege to eat.
But, he didn't have the privilege to use his phone, apparently. Which really bummed him out because he was hoping he could text Ashton or Mellie.
Well, he mostly wanted to text Mellie. Aka, Mary Elizabeth. It seemed like a mouthful to say Mary Elizabeth, it was six syllables, so Michael kept texting her nicknames one day that she would like and agree on. He made Mellie, because he'd shortened Elizabeth to Ellie, and then put the M in front for Mary. He thought he was pretty smart for making something up like that. She just called him Mickey.
Michael looked around the room as he sat in a seat near the door. Once the bell rang he wanted to get his phone and get out of here. There were three guys in here, one of them being Vick who had a bandage on his jaw, and a girl. The guys looked like they belonged to the wrestling team, they had muscles on muscles and short hair. The girl had heavy makeup and these contacts that made her eyes red. Michael looked back to the front of the room before any of them could catch him looking.
Just as the bell rang, the teacher in the front stood up from his chair. He pressed a button on a remote to get the projector to turn on.
"What movie do you guys want to watch? I have School of Rock, 22 Jump Street, and The Avengers," the teacher asked as he held up three different DVDs.
This is what in-school suspension is? Kids are told to learn discipline, so they put them in this room for a whole period, but instead they learn that if you do stupid things you get to watch a movie for forty-five minutes?
At first no one answered his question. Michael thought that School of Rock would be cool to watch, let's be honest here, Michael loves that movie. But he thought if he said to watch that one everyone would judge him, so he didn't say anything.
"Avengers it is then." The teacher placed the other movies on his desk and then opened the only DVD left. He put it in his computer and the movie started up after three minutes of patiently waiting.
Throughout the movie, the two wrestlers started to talking to one another while the teacher sat by the computer on his iPad with headphones on, like he was watching a completely different movie. Vick was eating a slice of pizza, and occasionally he'd touch his bandage. The girl just sat there, like Michael, bored.
He thought of how he wish he had his phone. And he thought of Mellie and the first time he texted her, and how their conversations sometimes went on for a span of three hours. And as he watched the movie, he's seen it like ten times before with Ashton, he thought of how Mellie could totally be Black Widow, because they both had red hair and wore black all the time and were both gorgeous. And then Michael thought of how cool it'd be to be on the Avengers Initiative, but his moment of inspiration went away after a few minutes.
After watching The Avengers for forty-three minutes, Michael went to his next class, which was English. Michael was in honors English somehow, and technically his C in this class was a B. They did a lot of essays, and Michael always went half-ass on them.
He sat down in his seat near the back of the room. Half of the class was already here, they were talking with one another as they waited for the teacher to come into the room. Michael put his arms on his desk, his left hand gripping to the top of his right wrist, and he put his head down on top. The day was almost over, and then he could talk to Ash. And Mellie.
Michael didn't even get a minute of shut-eye when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He looked up to see who it was, normally no one ever talked to him in this class, and was greeted with the sight of Luke Hemmings.
"Hey," Luke said as he looked down at Michael. The corners of his lips went up to form a very small smile on his face. His cheek was purple and blue from Vick's punch, but it didn't need a bandage like Vick did.
"Hey, Luke. I didn't see you in Feldy's today," Michael said as he sat up straight in his desk. Luke and him have attempted to become friends. It's been a day, but so far things were looking fine. They had plenty of time to talk while in the Dean's office, their parents were in there for a half hour talking to their Deans.
Luke sat in the desk next to Michael, the one that no one ever sat in, and bit down on his bottom lip. "The nurses wanted to see how my cheek was doing. They gave me an ice pack and everything. It doesn't hurt, so I don't know why they made me stay there the whole period. Was Feldmann there today?"
"Yeah, on time. I just saw Vick last period. I think I punched him pretty good, he has a bandage on his jaw."
Luke gave a small laugh, which made Michael sort of regret saying that. Luke probably didn't think it was good to punch people and see how messed up they look after the fight. He was the know-it-all, good kid, teacher's pet. Too bad he gave in so easily to Vick.
"I was thinking if you wanted to hang out sometime after school," Luke said after a moment of silence. Michael turned to look at him, surprised that he was mentioning hanging out already. Luke shuffled his feet on the tile flooring as he looked down at his lap, fiddling with his fingers. "You don't have to say yes, but, I was just thinking." He looked up at Michael, away from his fingers and feet. His blue eyes slowly wavered back and forth as he watched Michael shift in his seat.
The bell rang, and Michael looked down at his hands on his desk. "Sure, Luke. Give me your number after class and we'll figure some stuff out, okay?"
Luke stood up and nodded, he had a smile on his face now. He walked back to his seat at the front, where he had left his backpack.
The teacher was sitting behind her desk already, typing away on the computer. Michael watched Luke and wondered if Luke was like him. He seemed like he had almost no friends, and he was quiet in class. And Michael was pretty sure he's never really seen him with a girl, but then again Michael tried to avoid Luke like it depended on his life.
"Good evening, class," his teacher pulled away from her computer and finally looked at everyone. She had a smile on her face, although he bet she really wasn't so happy to be here. She then looked at Luke in the front, and her eyes widened. She walked towards him, her long skirt flowing behind her, as she bent over to look at his cheek.
There were whispers around the class, and then Michael could feel a pair of eyes on him. But he stayed watching Luke even though the people sitting near Luke slowly started to look at Michael also.
The teacher was having a silent conversation with Luke, and he nodded his head at her before she walked away from him. She started talking about something random as she stood in the middle of the classroom, and Luke turned around to look at Michael quickly. His face was red with embarrassment, but once he saw Michael already staring at him he sort of calmed down. He ran a hand through his golden hair before smiling at Mikey and turning away.
