CJ's POV

I kept remembering the day Jay came home. I was happy he was back, but I knew he wasn't the same. He craved adrenaline, even though he was almost killed in the ambush he was in. I was thinking back to the promise he made to Will and I right before he left.

*flashback*
We were standing at the O'Hare airport. "Will, can you take care of her for me while I'm gone?" Jay asked.

"Yeah, man," Will nodded. "That's not gonna change while you're gone."

"Thanks," Jay replied. He walked up to me. "Hey."

"Hi," I stated, trying to keep from crying. "I know you have to go."

"I'm always gonna be here in your heart," Jay replied. He put a locket on me. I opened it and looked down. "Just something to remind you that I'm always with you." All I could do was close it and look up at him. "Can you promise me something?"

"Anything," I nodded.

"Wait for me?" Jay asked, as he showed me a ring. "I know it's unexpected and probably the last thing you wanna hear from the guy going away."

"I'll wait," I nodded.

"What?" Jay asked.

"We've tried dating different people in school and we always came back to each other," I stated. "I wanna give us another try and I'll wait for you." Jay smiled as he slid the ring on my finger. "Just come back home in one piece."
*end flashback*

That was 9 years ago. When Jay got back, we had a courthouse marriage. Here we are, three years into our marriage. There was a knock on the bathroom door. "Uhm, yeah?" I called out. I looked at the ring on my finger. "I'm gonna be a minute."

"You okay?" Will asked

"You okay?" Will asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I stated. My timer went off and I grabbed the pregnancy test off the sink. "It's positive."

"What's positive?" Will asked as I opened the door. I looked at him. "You don't have covid, do you?"

"We're 4 years post-covid, and no, I'm negative on that end," I stated. "I need to go see Jay."

"Don't you work?" Will asked as I push past him.

"Not at the bank on Saturdays and my firehouse shift is later as well as my bartending job," I replied as I grabbed my coat off the rack. I grabbed my keys and purse. "I'm gonna go. If you need me, text or call me." I drove to the 21st District and walked inside. "Hey, Trudy. May you buzz me up?"

"What brings you in today, Ambers?" Trudy asked.

"It's Ambers-Halstead," I smiled. "And just a little family matter for Jay." Trudy rolled her eyes and let me up. "Hey, guys."
