(Y/n) pov

I was three years old when my mother and Alex got married. Up until that point, I still knew nothing about my father. Not that I really cared, my mom was all I needed. She and I were a team before he got abusive. He also cared about me as well.

"Hey, (Y/n)! What are you building there, sweetie?", my mother asked me.

"I'm building a rocket ship, mommy!", I squealed excitedly.

While he worked at the law firm, my mom and I would stay at home or get our nails done when Alex would give us money. She also taught me how to work because money doesn't just magically fly into our pockets. We have to earn what we deserve.

My mom met Alex when she was pregnant with me. She wasn't used to having money handed to her so, she would occasionally pick up extra shifts at the diner while Uncle Shoupe would look after me.

She also taught me how to fight and swim at the beach. The one thing I remember most about the beach was when I was six, seeing a blond boy around my age, surfing with his father. I wanted to do that but, my mom was afraid of going into the water so, that wasn't happening any time soon.

When that boy got out of the water, our eyes connected with each other and he ran over to me.

"Hi!", he greeted me.

"Hello.", I greeted awkwardly, I wasn't used to boys talking to me.

"Do you surf?", he asked curiously.

"No, is that what you were doing? I wanna do it too!", I chuckled.

"Really? It isn't really much of a girly thing to do but I'll ask my dad if we can teach you!", he rambled, "dad!", he yelled.

"Boy, what did I tell you about running around without an adult?!", his dad exclaimed.

"I'm sorry!", he flinched, "this is my new friend! She wants to surf, can we teach her?", the boy asked his dad.

"I dunno, son. Where's your parents, kid?", the man asked me.

"(Y/n)!", my mother shouted as she ran over to me, "please don't run away from me, something dangerous could've happened to you and I could've lost you!", she exclaimed.

"I'm sorry, mommy, it won't happen again. Can they teach me how to surf? I promise to be good forever!", I asked gently.

"Sweetie, we don't know these people and- Luke.", she paused as she saw the man's face.

"Selena, how ya doin? Haven't seen ya since ya left to figure right with that new guy of yours.", the man rambled.

Who is this guy?

"Come on, sweetheart, we have to go. Your father wants us home and Topper set up the Wii so you guys could play that just dance game.", she explained to me.

"But mommy, I wanna surf with my new friend!", I whined.

"No, (Y/n)! I don't want to see this man and his son around you ever again! Let's go!", she snapped as she tugged me away.
