The Lan family had a family gathering, and they celebrate it twice a year. Most of their visitors came from the diverse bloodline of the Lan, making the place crowded and noisy.

Lan Wangji made his way out to the bustling crowd since he doesn't want to associate with his family that much.

"Wangji, can we talk?"

Lan Xichen asked as he appeared behind Lan Wangji.

Lan Wangji stopped his tracks and faced his brother.

"I'm listening."

"Wangji, I want to apologize for being insensitive back there in the Riverbank."
He started. Lan Wangji's face is stoic, remembering how his brother became harsh at Wei Wuxian that time.

"I know that Wei Wuxian is your first ever friend, and you trust him that much. But then, there are things that our family knows or owns that should be confidential to others. We need to protect our heritage with our lives, and opening that knowledge to others means can create havoc in our lives."

"What are we even hiding? Those are just natural sceneries that all the students should at least take a look at. It will even attract a lot of students in the future. So, I don't understand what are we protecting."

Lan Wangji talked back in low voice. He doesn't want to raise his voice, but he just cannot seem to understand why are they so overprotective with that place.

"You'll understand soon, Wangji."
Lan Xichen said in a calm voice, not wanting to argue with his little brother. This is very unlikely of him, since Wangji has always obeyed what he said to him.

"I see, you don't trust me anymore."
Wangji replied and looked away. He was about to walk out when Xichen stopped him.

"Okay, I'll tell you. Let's talk inside."

Lan Xichen led the way and they went inside Xichen's room.

Even though they are brothers, they don't usually go to each other's rooms as they highly respect each other's privacy. So, this is the first time that Wangji was brought inside his brother's chamber.

"Come take a look at this."
Xichen said and took out a photograph from his drawers. Wangji took a good look at the photo and he was astonished at the familiarity of it.

"The Cloud Recesses!"
Wangji blurted out and studied the photo carefully.

"How did you know?"
Xichen asked, surprised at his brother's acknowledgement of the place.

"It was a long story, brother. But, is this real? Is this still existing?"

He asked, persistence in his eyes. His brother doesn't know what to respond, so he nod his head and took another photo.

"This is our ancestral dwelling, and we are prohibited to go that place."

"Why is that?"
Wangji is sure that this is where they reside generations before. He never thought that this exists in this time.

"Because there was someone from our clan who tried to enter that place, but he was not able to come back alive."

"You mean, the place was cursed?"

"I cannot say that it is cursed, but Cloud Recesses is the one protecting our whole village. There was once a time when other clans tried to break in the walls of the Cloud Recesses. Yes, they were able to get in, but a huge earthquake and fire from heaven dawned in the whole village, taking the lives of hundreds of people."

"And that includes our parents."
Wangji added upon realizing what happened.

He was around 4 years old when they suddenly changed houses. He also noticed that his parents were no longer with them as they relocated. He wants to ask where they went, but his brother always tell him that they are in a better place now.
