Description: (AU where the Avengers formed a decade or so earlier, so Natasha was still in the Red Room at the time) When Steve, Tony, and Clint find a girl drifting passed them in the river, of course they have to get her out! But they definitely didn't expect her to be alive and so injured, and they 100% didn't anticipate her sarcastic, secretive personality.
Ships: None
Major Characters: Natasha, Steve, Tony, Clint
Minor Characters: Coulson (mentioned)
I am not a doctor, nor do I know pretty much anything about medical equipment, so all that-related stuff in this chapter is based on movies and books.
Sorry for the later update, I was working on two chapters at once. The other one (a Winterwidow chapter) should be out soon, though.
This chapter was been read through and edited (for the most part).
Enjoy the chapter!

One could say it was Tony's fault they found the half-dead girl drifting away in the river.
After all, it had been because Tony had missed his cue that their mission had gone wrong and they'd ended up lying low in the safe house until Fury or Coulson or whoever else was in charge of it could legally get them plane tickets back to the US.
But then again, it had been Steve who'd seen her and Clint who'd known how to safely get her out of the water.
And it was Tony who cleared off the kitchen table so Steve could gently lay the unconscious girl on it.
But let's go back to the beginning.
The mission was supposed to be a simple one for the Avengers, which was why Fury didn't even bother calling Thor down from Asgard or making Bruce join them. All they had to do was grab a flash drive and kill anyone guards who saw them. But Tony—oh, Tony, had been whispering furiously to Clint about one thing or another because the billionaire was bored, causing Tony to miss his cue to grab the drive and causing Clint to not remind Tony that he had missed his cue.
So Steve had rushed in and grabbed it in a hurry, not realizing that the reason Tony was supposed to do it was because there was a bomb attached to it that Tony had to disconnect.
The only reason they hadn't all been blown to bits was because Clint found a small underground bunker for an occasion like that.
Unfortunately, the entire building and parts of the town around it had caught fire and caved in. And it didn't help that multiple people had seen the three Avengers limping out of the building, covered in dust and one of them clutching a flash drive.
So, in a panic, Clint had called Coulson (because he definitely did not want to deal with Fury's anger right then and there) and Coulson told them to lay low in a nearby safe house.
Luckily (as Tony reminded Clint and Steve whenever either of them brought up how he was the reason they failed the mission), it was a nice house—three bedrooms and a pullout couch, a kitchen, bathroom, and porch. It was fully stocked up with food, water, and medical supplies, as well as being several miles from civilization. It was in a forest on the edge of a long, fast-flowing river that was so shallow that it only went up to your knees.
Coulson had advised them to stay there for a week at minimum, but after only a day they couldn't stand all being stuffed inside together (the broken lamp was Clint's fault), so Steve made everyone do something outside, but with seeing distance of the house.
