Ilovecharligrant. you're welcome. this is still a sore topic.
"SPAIN HAVE DONE IT! THE WORLD CUP HAS BEEN WON."
That's all I've heard since the final whistle went. Of course, it's been anything but quiet, but all I can hear is my heart pumping. It doesn't feel real. It feels like a dream that I have yet to wake up from.
The first thing I did when the whistle went was run over to Aitana and jump in her arms, burying my head into her neck. Tears welling up in my eyes. I can't believe it. We won against England.
Of course I feel horrible about it, England is like my second home, many people in my family live there but I was born in Spain and remained in Spain with my parents while everyone else moved to London.
I'm also friends with pretty much everyone on the lionesses and even those who retired, such as Ellen White, Alex Scott, and Jill Scott.
I feel especially bad for Lucy. This might have been her last World Cup, and she practically had her hand, not the trophy. I was going to walk over to her but saw Ona trying to comfort her, so I went over to Alessia Russo and Ella Toone, arguably two of my best friends.
"You done so well." I murmured as they collapsed on the floor, I began rubbing both their backs. "We got lucky. We both deserved it, but on the day we got lucky. It's not your fault. It's not Marys. The World Cup is pure luck, and it was in our favour today, but I know you'll get it next time."
"Thanks (Y/n/n), but you outclass us." Alessia said, sniffling a little, trying desperately not to break down on the pitch.
"I'm sorry I have an interview, but I'll talk to you later, okay?" I say more demanding than asking.
"We're be fine, go for your interview. "Please (Y/n/n) don't ruin today for you because we're sad." Tooney butted in.
"Okay, see you soon." I say before jogging off towards the interviewer.
"(Y/l/n) it is a pleasure to see you. Obviously, it is an amazing day for not just you but Spain. You played against the odds and won. How does that feel?"
"Um. It honestly feels like a dream I need to wake up from. I don't even know, to be honest. I told Lessi and Tooney this earlier, fútbol is a game of chance. Today it was in our favour, not theirs but it was pure luck in which we won. The lionesses are an amazing team and have a right to be sad but shouldn't feel like they've let the world down."
"Speaking of chance. How did it feel to win the World Cup with your girlfriend Aitana Bonmatí and many of your close friends since the under 13 Spanish squads. It must feel special."
"No doubt about it. It is obviously really speci-. " I was cut off by someone jumping on my back, which I quickly realised was Aitana.
"Aitana, please join in here. We were just asking (Y/n) how it felt winning the World Cup with you and many others who you have both played in during the under 13s squad."
Aitana took a second to process the English before speaking. "It is extremely special, I never would've thought we would make it this far or even win it without (Y/n/n) and her support. It is crazy how much she has helped, not just me and the team, and we all find it really special. It is incredible that a few of us have played with each other since under 13s and have now won a World Cup with each other."
"Well, that was going to be my reply, but Tana said it for me soo..." I say with a small shrug before smiling at Aitana.
"I think that's all we need for now. Please go get ready for one of the greatest moments of your life." The reporter said, which made me quietly sigh and mutter under my breath, which Tana heard, so she smiled at me and gave my arm a light smack as we were walking away.
"We done it, Tana."
"We did. I always told you we would."
"We? I have done nothing. You done all the hard work pretty much." I reply almost immediately, which caused Aitana to glare at me.
'You're the one who scores the only goal. YOUR is the reason we won this (Y/n/n)."
"Split it? We both done a lot then." I tried compromising quickly, giving up trying to give the others all the credit, Aitana's glares are crazy scary.
"Deal." Tana agreed with a small smile on her face, knowing she won this debate. That's what I love about her. Her smile but not just her smile. I love her personality, her smile, and everything else about her.
"I love you, Tana." I say randomly.
"All right. what's going on?"
"I just realised that I would never have done this without you and that you make me smile when you do, laugh when you do, and have got me to love everything about you."
Aitana gave a small sigh before looking up at me and pulling me into a hug.
"I love you too (Y/n/n), but we do need to go get ready."
We walked to the changing rooms to get changed quickly for the awards, hand in hand. In a silence that was different. It was comfortable and nice just knowing each other was there on such an occasion.
Aitana is my home. I understand that now. Even if I didn't before.
